Valorization of fish discards for the sustainable production of renewable fuels

open access: yesJournal of Cleaner Production, 2020
Abstract Production of eco-friendly fuels is gaining momentum owing to the setbacks associated with non-renewable fossil fuels, which mainly include cost, energy crisis, and global warming. The drawbacks associated with recognized feedstocks necessitate the need to explore new feedstocks for biofuel production.

Fish Discards as Source of Health-Promoting Biopeptides

open access: yes, 2018
The vast diversity of marine organisms is a source of enormous potential for obtaining bioactive compounds for use in the food industry. In this context, discards, which are defined as the fraction of the fish catch that is not retained onboard but ...

Scavenging by fish of discards from the Patagonian squid fishery

Fisheries Research, 1999
Abstract Stomach contents of six fish species which are typically taken as bycatch in the squid fishery on the Patagonian shelf and slope were examined. Squid remains discarded by the fishery represented some 20–40% by volume of the diet of Merluccius hubbsi , Patagononotothen ramsayi and Macrourus holotrachys .

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear at urban coastlines

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2022
Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) is considered a major threat to ocean biodiversity. Yet, little is known of the interactive impacts of ALDFGs and urban nearshore biodiversity and habitats, especially in Southeast Asia where fisheries efforts are increasing.

Discards and bycatch: A review of wasted fishing

2023
Bycatch and discards are a significant issue for global fisheries, with discards considered unnecessary mortality and wasted fishing. Discards have declined due to more selective gear and changes in regulations, but data on discard rates and species remains challenging to collect.

Electronic tags reveal behaviour of captured and discarded fish

Journal of Fish Biology, 2009
Internally implanted data storage tags (DST) recording hydrostatic pressure (depth) and temperature in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua were used to track the behaviour of nine individuals during fishing operations. Gadus morhua showed identifiable and characteristic behavioural responses to different capture processes.
