Ammonia distribution and excretion in fish

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 1987
This paper reviews the literature concerning ammonia production, storage and excretion in fish. Ammonia is the end product of protein catabolism and is stored in the body of fish in high concentrations relative to basal excretion rates. Ammonia, if allowed to accumulate, is toxic and is converted to less toxic compounds or excreted.

Distributional Patterns of Malayan Freshwater Fish

Ecology, 1967
A survey is made of the overall pattern of distribution of freshwater fish within Malaya and also of the associations found in the three important habitat types. The lack of east—west differentiation indicates that geographical barriers are not important in determining the distributional pattern.

Monitoring fish distributions along electrofishing segments

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2014
Electrofishing is widely used to monitor fish species composition and relative abundance in streams and lakes. According to standard protocols, multiple segments are selected in a body of water to monitor population relative abundance as the ratio of total catch to total sampling effort. The standard protocol provides an assessment of fish distribution

Intracellular distribution of fish muscle alkaline proteinase

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1982
1. Intracellular distribution of a muscle alkaline proteinase was investigated on four kinds of fish. 2. The total activity of the muscle proteinase of carp, Cyprinus carpio, was larger in both myofibrillar (Mf) and microsomal (Mic) fractions than the activity in mitochondrial, lysosomal, and supernatant fractions.

Nonuniform distribution of enzymes in fish eggs

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1982
AbstractThe distribution of enzymes in the blastoderm and the yolk was investigated in the eggs of the bony fish, Misgurnus fossilis. The total activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G‐6‐PD), and aldolase (ALD) did not change during early development.

Fish mercury distribution in Massachusetts, USA lakes

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 1999
Abstract The sediment, water, and three species of fish from 24 of Massachusetts' (relatively) least-impacted water bodies were sampled to determine the patterns of variation in edible tissue mercury concentrations and the relationships of these patterns to characteristics of the water, sediment, and water bodies (lake, wetland, and ...

The Distribution of Freshwater Fishes

Nature, 1926
As a mere sciolist in geology it sometimes occurs to me to wonder whether enough attention has been given to the distribution of freshwater fauna, in estimating the origin of British land contours and the course of rivers. It is generally accepted that until the North Sea was formed by an extensive subsidence of land in an age not geologically remote ...

Bathymetric distributions of notothenioid fishes

Polar Biology, 2017
There has been no comprehensive study of the bathymetry of notothenioid fishes. Therefore, I analyzed minimum and maximum depths and depth ranges for 128 of 142 species that collectively range from 0 to ≈3000 m. Means (and medians) for maximum depths are 176 m (75 m) for non-Antarctic, 511 m (360 m) for sub-Antarctic, and 963 m (899 m) for Antarctic ...
