Chordata: Fish eggs and larvae
2017This chapter describes the taxonomy of fish eggs and larvae. Most fish eggs and larvae are planktonic, and are commonly found in plankton net tows. Collectively these fish stages are referred to as ichthyoplankton. The chapter covers their life cycle, ecology, and general morphology.

The physiology of digestion in fish larvae
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1986The acquisition, digestion, and assimilation of food is critical for the growth and survival of fish larvae; a fish larva either grows or it perishes. Fish larvae are characterized by digestive systems and diets that differ from adults. Larvae undergo a pattern of trophic ontogeny, changing diet with increasing size, and these changes result in ...

Abstract Healing of skin lesions has been investigated in herring, Clupea harengus L., plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and salmon, Salmo salar L., larvae. Healing was observed in vivo and by histology, the main response being a mass migration of epidermal cells from the periphery of the lesion. Wound areas of 0.1–7 mm 2 closed in 4–12 h, the

Priorities during early growth of fish larvae
Aquaculture, 1997Abstract The small and numerous eggs of most teleost fishes develop into small larvae with little yolk, which is depleted soon after hatching. They are the smallest self-supporting vertebrates. When these larvae complete their morpho-functional systems necessary to escape from predators and to obtain external food with priority, their further chances

On fish eggs and larvae in the Skagerrak
Sarsia, 1968Abstract The distribution of fish eggs and larvae shows the importance of the current system in the Skagerrak. The Jutland, Baltic, and Norwegian (coastal) currents form together an anti-clockwise circulation which results in the ichthyoplankton drifting in a characteristic way.

Extraretinal Photosensitivity in Fish Larvae
1975The presentation of a paper on extraretinal photoreception may at first appear incongruous in an Advanced Study Institute on vision in fish. Extraretinal photoreceptors are, however, far more important to the life of fishes than the relatively small bulk of published research on this subject may reflect.

Nutrition of Marine Fish Larvae
Journal of Applied Aquaculture, 2003ABSTRACT In the hatchery production of aquatic animals for aquaculture, livefoods such as diatoms; rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis and brine shrimp, Artemia salina, have been used throughout the world. However, such production requires large facilities, maintenance expenses, and labor to produce a desired amount of live foods constantly and reliably ...

Immunostimulation and trained immunity in marine fish larvae
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2018Little is known about the strategies for immunization and immunostimulation in marine fish larvae; however, both strategies have the potential to improve survival during the first days of larval culture. The biological variety of marine fish larvae complicates the standardization of the application of these strategies, although the mechanisms of early ...

Biosynthesis in vivo and excretion of cortisol by fish larvae
The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1997There is a posthatching rise in levels of endogenous cortisol during the ontogeny of those teleosts studied to date. This is thought to be the result of de novo synthesis of cortisol by the larvae, although there is no direct evidence for this. The present study aimed to demonstrate this process in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer).

The teratogenic action of thalidomide on marine fish larvae
Experientia, 1977The effect of thalidomide on the differentiation of 4 species of marine fishes was investigated. Thalidomide interferes with the development of the skeleton. It is indicated that thalidomide acts as a mutagene.
