Electronic monitoring in fisheries: Lessons from global experiences and future opportunities

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, 2019
Since the beginning of the 21st century, electronic monitoring (EM) has emerged as a cost‐efficient supplement to existing catch monitoring programmes in fisheries.

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Hindered, Overlooked, and Undervalued: Gender Equality in Nordic Blue Economies

open access: yesOcean and Society
The Nordic countries are ranked among the most gender equal countries worldwide. Equality, political, and civil rights, leading to the high participation of women in the workforce, have paved the way for this egalitarian view.

Unravelling the scientific potential of high resolution fishery data

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources, 2018
Fisheries science and fisheries management advice rely on both scientific and commercial data to estimate the distribution and abundance of marine species.

Livelihood Approaches and Fisheries Management in the Lower Mekong Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Known as livelihood approaches, this new way of looking at fisheries management is becoming increasingly common, particularly with development agencies and other organisations. However, there is a perception that the concept of livelihoods and livelihood

The Fisheries Exhibition [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1883
THE allusion that you made to the marine invertebrates in our department led one of your scientific readers immediately to examine them. He was surprised to find them properly arranged, classified, and named, with a few exceptions. All the alcoholic specimens were looking bright and beautiful.

Biophysical analysis of angiotensin II and amyloid‐β cross‐interaction in aggregation and membrane disruption

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Angiotensin II (AngII), a neuropeptide, interacts with amyloid‐β (Aβ), a key player in Alzheimer's disease. This study reveals that AngII reduces Aβ aggregation and membrane disruption in vitro. Biophysical assays and molecular modeling suggest AngII binds disordered Aβ forms, potentially modulating early amyloidogenic events and contributing to ...

Fisheries and Marine Resources of Hawaii and the U.S.-associated Pacific Islands: An Introduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The fisheries of Hawaii and other U.S.-associated islands in the Pacific Ocean are characterized by high diversity, both in the species exploited and the human cultures that exploit them.

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...
