We analysed the extent to which European politicians have adhered to scientific recommendations on annual total allowable catches (TACs) from 1987 to 2011, covering most of the period of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). For the 11 stocks examined, TACs were set higher than scientific recommendations in 68% of decisions.

Formal analyses of long-term global marine fisheries prospects have yet to be performed, because fisheries research focuses on local, species-specific management issues. Extrapolation of present trends implies expansion of bottom fisheries into deeper waters, serious impact on biodiversity, and declining global catches, the last possibly aggravated by ...

Landings of the spurdog, Squalus acanthias, at Mevagissey reflect the changes in phosphate at the neighbouring International Hydrographic Station Ei.It is suggested that commercial landings of rays and skates ought to follow major changes in nutrient content of the overlying water with a time lag of some years.

Emerging issues in fisheries science by fisheries scientists
Journal of Fish BiologyAbstractThe current epoch in fisheries science has been driven by continual advances in laboratory techniques and increasingly sophisticated approaches to analysing datasets. We now have the scientific knowledge and tools to proactively identify obstacles to the sustainable management of marine resources. However, in addition to technological advances,

Fisheries policy provides fundamental insights for trade lawyers. The scholar and practitioner of international trade law learns from a study of the utilization and trade of marine living resources about common dilemmas: the pressure that trade places on the sustainability of production; the constraints on consumers seeking to discriminate on the basis
