Redox‐dependent binding and conformational equilibria govern the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this work, we reveal how different enzyme binding configurations influence the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in live cells using time‐resolved anisotropy imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Mathematical modelling shows that the redox states of the NAD and NADP pools govern these configurations, shaping their fluorescence ...

Certifying the commons: eco-certification, privatization, and collective action

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2014
We examine new dynamics of privatization and collective action in common pool resource situations facilitated by the nonstate multistakeholder institutions of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the global leader in sustainability certification for ...

Contextualizing Scenarios to Explore Social-Ecological Futures: A Three Step Participatory Case Study for the Humboldt Current Upwelling System

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
In the face of global change, the exploration of possible futures of marine social-ecological systems (MSES) becomes increasingly important. A variety of models aims at improving our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and complexities by assessing how ...

Collateral damage? Small‐scale fisheries in the global fight against IUU fishing

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, 2020
Concern over illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has led to a number of policy, trade and surveillance measures. While much attention has been given to the impact of IUU regulation on industrial fleets, recognition of the distinct impacts ...

"They Come, They Fish, and They Go:” EC Fisheries Agreements with Cape Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Fisheries agreements with the European Community (EC) are an important component of the fisheries sector in Cape Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe, constituting today a key source of income for the respective fisheries administration.

Neutrophil deficiency increases T cell numbers at the site of tissue injury in mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In wild‐type mice, injury or acute inflammation induces neutrophil influx followed by macrophage accumulation. Mcl1ΔMyelo (neutrophil‐deficient) mice lack neutrophils, and in response to muscle injury show fewer macrophages and exhibit strikingly elevated T‐cell numbers, primarily non‐conventional “double‐negative” (DN) αβ and γδ T cells.

Science and Fisheries [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1920
No one will gainsay Mr. H. G. Maurice's fundamental premise (NATURE, November 25, p. 419) that scientific fisheries investigation is primarily a matter for the State—if the authorities have a due sense of their responsibility in selecting for the task scientific men whose training and ability specially fit them for the complex work.

Rapid recovery of depleted abalone in Isla Natividad, Baja California, Mexico

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
In the last decades, many marine invertebrates have experienced dramatic declines throughout many coastal marine ecosystems worldwide due to overfishing, disease outbreaks, and climate vulnerability. Despite extensive conservation and restoration effort,

Opportunities to improve fisheries management through innovative technology and advanced data systems

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, 2019
Fishery‐dependent data are integral to sustainable fisheries management. A paucity of fishery data leads to uncertainty about stock status, which may compromise and threaten the economic and food security of the users dependent upon that stock and ...
