Evaluating the sustainability of a de facto harvest strategy for British Columbia's Spot Prawn (Pandalus platyceros) fishery in the presence of environmental drivers of recruitment and hyperstable catch rates [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The Spot Prawn trap fishery off the west coast of British Columbia (BC) is managed using a fixed escapement strategy that aims to prevent recruitment overfishing while maximizing expected long-term yield by closing the fishery when the catch rate of spawners, projected to the following spring, drops below 1.7 spawners per trap (the de jure rule).

Taurine promotes glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion in enteroendocrine L cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Taurine, a sulfur‐containing amino acid, is likely taken up by enteroendocrine L cells via the taurine transporter. This process increases the levels of cytosolic ATP. The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion through membrane depolarization is caused by the closure of ATP‐sensitive potassium channels ...

Fishery science: the study of fishery systems [PDF]

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources, 1995
Resume The pursuit of sustainable fisheries requires a broad vision of fishery science - as the scientilic study of fishery systems. This irnplies the incorporation into fishery science of research on fishery management, fishing processes, fi shcr bchaviour and the human dynamics of fishery systerns.

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Toward a Model for Fisheries Social Impact Assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper presents a model for Fisheries Social Impact Assessment (SIA) that lays the groundwork for development of fisheries-focused, quantitative social assessments with a clear conceptual model.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Decision Support Systems in Fisheries and Aquaculture: A systematic review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Decision support systems help decision makers make better decisions in the face of complex decision problems (e.g. investment or policy decisions). Fisheries and Aquaculture is a domain where decision makers face such decisions since they involve factors from many different scientific fields.
