We analysed the extent to which European politicians have adhered to scientific recommendations on annual total allowable catches (TACs) from 1987 to 2011, covering most of the period of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). For the 11 stocks examined, TACs were set higher than scientific recommendations in 68% of decisions.

Formal analyses of long-term global marine fisheries prospects have yet to be performed, because fisheries research focuses on local, species-specific management issues. Extrapolation of present trends implies expansion of bottom fisheries into deeper waters, serious impact on biodiversity, and declining global catches, the last possibly aggravated by ...

Fisheries research and fisheries legislation
Fisheries Research, 1999A statement of the principles and policies of fisheries administration and management is presented as a basis for a plea for linguistic precision and avoidance of ambiguity in the various usages of fisheries science.

Landings of the spurdog, Squalus acanthias, at Mevagissey reflect the changes in phosphate at the neighbouring International Hydrographic Station Ei.It is suggested that commercial landings of rays and skates ought to follow major changes in nutrient content of the overlying water with a time lag of some years.

Management of Multispecies Fisheries
Science, 1979With the overexploitation of many conventional fish stocks, and growing interest in harvesting new kinds of food from the sea, there is increasing need for managers of fisheries to take account of interactions among species. In particular, as Antarctic krill-fishing industries grow, there is a need to agree upon sound principles for managing the ...

The depletion of fish stocks on a global scale is well documented. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation collects statistics on fisheries from all states and, despite obvious shortcomings in the data, a clear picture has been available for some time.

Emerging issues in fisheries science by fisheries scientists
Journal of Fish BiologyAbstractThe current epoch in fisheries science has been driven by continual advances in laboratory techniques and increasingly sophisticated approaches to analysing datasets. We now have the scientific knowledge and tools to proactively identify obstacles to the sustainable management of marine resources. However, in addition to technological advances,

THE development of methods of preserving fish was a matter of national importance during the war, and the present account is founded on investigations started in that period. The fish used for canning are mostly surface-feeding and living fish, such as sprats (or bristling), sardines (or pilchards), tunny and bonito, herring and mackerel, the only ...
