Model-based estimation of the line tension in a fishing reel
Rotating-spool fishing reels offer several advantages with respect to fixed-spool ones, among all the bigger casting distance achieved thanks to the spool free rotation. However, the rotating spool may cause backlash as soon as the lure touches the water, since the line keeps freely going out from the spool.

Reeling in the prey: Fishing behaviour in an orb web spider
When an insect is intercepted by a spider web, spiders quickly locate the prey, and run towards it. Once they make contact with the prey, they immobilise the prey and retrieve it to the centre of the web or the retreat for consumption. However, in rare circumstances, the spider can also pull the prey towards itself either while running to the prey or ...

Novel design solutions for fishing reel mechanisms
Currently, there are various reels on the market regarding the type of mechanism, which achieves the winding and unwinding of the line. The designers have the purpose of obtaining a linear transmission function, by means of a simple and small-sized mechanism. However, the present solutions are not satisfactory because of large deviations from linearity
