Rosemary Essential Oil Microemulsion for Fungal Keratitis Treatment. [PDF]

open access: yesChem Biodivers
ABSTRACT This study investigated the use of Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) essential oil in a microemulsion (ME) formulation for the treatment of ocular fungal keratitis, a serious infection that can lead to blindness. The ME was characterized in terms of pH, stability, homogeneity, osmolarity, and other physicochemical properties.

Bioaccessible Sulforaphane Drives Macrophage Migration and Differentiation by Reprogramming the Interleukin Profile in Intestinal Inflammation. [PDF]

open access: yesBiofactors
Bioaccessible Sulforaphane Drives Macrophage Migration and Differentiation by Reprogramming the Interleukin Profile in Intestinal Inflammation. ABSTRACT Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) arises from dysregulated interactions between the immune system and the intestinal microenvironment.

Caper Bush (<i>Capparis spinosa</i> L.) Minerals and Trace Elements Composition as Affected by Harsh Habitats in Gypsum and Non-Gypsum Drylands. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
Elemental comparison of leaves and fruits in gypsum soil showed that gypsum soils had good quality with high levels of Ca, S, and Mg. The mineral composition of Caper bush (Capparis spinosa L.) leaves and fruits was only slightly affected by increasing gypsum in the soil. Additionally, the biochemical adaptation of C.

Antibacterial Essential Oils as Adjuvants to Inhibit Antibiotic Resistance in Multidrug-resistant Bacteria. [PDF]

open access: yesChem Biodivers
Combining bacterially inactivated antibiotics with antibacterial essential oils (EOs) is an alternative combinatorial therapy against antibiotic‐resistant bacteria, as EOs can also modulate resistance. Apart from the rehabilitation of the antibiotic, this combination is probably more difficult to overcome evolutionarily due to the antibacterial mixture

Ecological convergence in phytochemistry and flower–insect visitor interactions along an Andean elevation gradient

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
In this study, we detected patterns of ecological convergence along elevation in floral volatiles as well as cost–benefit ratio in seed versus pollinated seeds. Our results suggest that these evolutionary patterns are the result of biotic and abiotic pressures.

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of two Costa Rican cultivars of ber (Ziziphus mauritiana): An underexploited crop in the American tropic

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 11, Issue 6, Page 3320-3328, June 2023., 2023
Ber has been cultivated in Asia for many years, and it has been introduced to the American tropic in recent years. We studied the characteristics and benefits of the cultivation of this fruit in Central America. We found out it produces higher antioxidant levels than many other reports, and also shows antimicrobial properties.

Structural and compositional dimensions of phytochemical diversity in the genus Piper reflect distinct ecological modes of action

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 1, Page 57-67, January 2022., 2022
Crude extract 1H NMR diversity synthesizes the compositional diversity and structural complexity of phytochemical mixtures. Plants can develop chemical diversity through different combinations of structural and compositional biosynthetic mechanisms; thus, methods incorporating both dimensions of phytochemical diversity can provide new theoretical ...

Assessment of Acute and Chronic Toxicity in Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus) and New Zealand Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) of an Enriched Polyphenol Extract Obtained from Caesalpinia spinosa. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Toxicol
Although herbal drugs are often considered safe for consumption, there is increasing evidence that some can generate undesirable health effects. However, polyphenols found in certain plants have been shown to provide a range of benefits for human health.

The color of greater flamingo feathers fades when no cosmetics are applied

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 20, Page 13773-13779, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Greater flamingos use cosmetic coloration by spreading uropygial secretions pigmented with carotenoids over their feathers, which makes the plumage redder. Because flamingos inhabit open environments that receive direct solar radiation during daytime, and carotenoids bleach when exposed to solar radiation, we expected that the plumage color ...

Antioxidant Activities of Commiphora leptophloeos (Mart.) J. B. Gillett) (Burseraceae) Leaf Extracts Using In Vitro and In Vivo Assays

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Commiphora leptophloeos is widely used in folk medicine without any scientific basis. Considering this, the aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical profile and the antioxidant activity of C. leptophloeos leaf extracts using in vitro and in vivo assays.
