Ruled Surface Machining on Five-Axis CNC Machine Tools
Journal of Manufacturing Processes, 2000Abstract To achieve high precision and high productivity in machining sculptured surfaces, a new architecture for a five-axis CNC interpolator for machining ruled surfaces was developed and demonstrated on a milling machine. The objective of the five-axis interpolator is to continuously maintain the milling cutter axis in parallel with the straight ...

Smooth Geodesic Interpolation for Five-Axis Machine Tools
IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2016The smoothness of tool trajectories would be as important as that of axis trajectories for five-axis machining. The present study proposes a geodesic interpolation for five-axis machine tools. The tool positions and orientations are fitted to geodesics, respectively, to achieve smooth accurate motions of the tool center point (TCP), smooth axis motions,

Tool selection for five-axis curvature matched machining
Computer-Aided Design, 2002This paper presents an automatic cutting tool selection methodology for five-axis finish surface machining based on the techniques of curvature matched machining. The criterion for cutter selection is to minimize the machine errors and to maximize material removal rate using an optimal filleted end mill selected from a standard cutting tool library ...

Dynamic Characteristics of Five-Axis CNC Machine Tools
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013According to the five-axis CNC machine tools, the main components are put to flexible and a rigid-flexible virtual prototype has been established. The influence on the machine tool stability is analyzed. The reliable theoretical basis has been provided for the structure optimization.

Smooth trajectory generation for five-axis machine tools
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2013Abstract This paper presents a smooth spline interpolation technique for five-axis machining of sculptured surfaces. The tool tip and orientation locations generated by the CAM system are first fitted to quintic splines independently to achieve geometric jerk continuity while decoupling the relative changes in position and orientation of the cutter ...

Five-Axis Machining Tool Vector Control of Impeller
Key Engineering Materials, 2009There are two key problems in the manufacture process of impeller, one is the collision of tool and blade, the other is gnawed-cutting arisen by non-uniform change of the cutter axis. UG software was used to solve those problems. Tool tip position was solved by UG. The control algorithm of collision-free cutter-axis was described and applied.

Repeatability of on-machine probing by a five-axis machine tool
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2020Abstract Assessing the repeatability of on-machine probing is required to estimate the measurement uncertainty. Currently, standards such as ISO 230–2:2014 and ISO 230–6:2002 include approaches only for a single-axis or a diagonal-path evaluation of the machine repeatability.

Kinematic Reliability Analysis of Five-Axis Machine Tool
Advanced Materials Research, 2011Five-axis CNC machine tool is the top product of numerically controlled machine tool. Kinmatic accuracy is an important index to evaluate the quality of mechanism. Kinematic accuracy analysis of the Five-axis machine tool in previous study ignores the randomness of each input error component, so the conclusions are imprecise.

Local toolpath smoothing for five-axis machine tools
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2015Abstract When five axis CNC machine tools follow series linear toolpath segments, the drives experience velocity, acceleration and jerk discontinuities at the block transition points. The discontinuities result in fluctuations on machine tool motions which lead to poor surface quality.

Tool path optimization in postprocessor of five-axis machine tools
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2013Generally, tool path is generated in a computer-aided manufacturing software considering only the geometry of machining parts. It is converted into numerical control (NC) codes in the postprocessor based on the particular machine kinematics. For some special types of five-axis machine tools, e.g., non-orthogonal five-axis machine tools, the generated ...
