Quantifying carbon allocation to mycorrhizal fungi by temperate forest tree species across a nitrogen availability gradient [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Terrestrial ecosystems make up the largest carbon pool with a major portion of that being forests. With carbon being a major concern due to global climate change, being able to make accurate models is increasingly important. Studies have shown that trees

Fixed Beamline Optimization for Intensity Modulated Carbon-Ion Therapy

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences, 2022
A major obstacle for the adoption of heavy ion therapy is the cost and technical difficulties to construct and maintain a rotational gantry. Many heavy ion treatment facilities instead choose to construct fixed beamlines as a compromise, which we propose to mitigate with optimized treatment couch angle.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Basic principles for sampling and reporting for studies involving the measurement of carbon sequestration in soils : [Abstract 588] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Variation in soil organic carbon (SOC) levels due to differences in soil management has been the subject of much investigation over the past decades. More recently, growing concerns relating to the consequences of increasing carbon dioxide levels in the ...

Palladium–Carbon Eutectic Fixed Point for Thermocouple Calibration

open access: yesInternational Journal of Thermophysics, 2010
A Pd–C eutectic fixed point has been produced using a molybdenum disilicide element, electrically heated furnace that was built in-house. The eutectic fixed point was measured with two Pt/Pd thermocouples calibrated at the fixed points of Sn, Zn, Al, Ag, and Au. An ITS-90 temperature of (1490.69 ± 0.88) °C (k =  2) was obtained for the inflection point

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Manipulating the torsion of molecules by strong laser pulses

open access: yes, 2009
A proof-of-principle experiment is reported, where torsional motion of a molecule, consisting of a pair of phenyl rings, is induced by strong laser pulses.
