Feasibility of a Pilot Crowdsourced Syndromic and Virological Surveillance Platform for Respiratory Illness in South Africa, CoughWatchSA, 2022

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, Volume 20, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Digital participatory surveillance (DPS) may provide information on reported influenza‐like illnesses (ILI). Combining DPS with laboratory testing allows pathogen identification. We assessed the feasibility of DPS and home‐based self‐swabbing (HBSS) in South Africa.

AAV‐Driven miR‐146a Promotes Neurite Outgrowth and Axonal Regeneration in Cortical Neurons

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 2, February 2026.
In the adult central nervous system (CNS), neuronal regeneration after injury is limited, resulting in poor functional recovery. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small noncoding RNAs that control gene expression, have gained attention as potential therapeutic agents, although their contribution to CNS repair remains insufficiently understood.

Identification of Novel Growth Factor Conjugated Nanofibers for Stimulation of Neuronal Growth

open access: yesMacromolecular Bioscience, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2026.
In this study, novel hybrid nanofibers composed of self‐assembling peptides (SAPs) conjugated with peptides derived from two growth factors (GFs), FGF2 and IGF1, were produced (FGF2‐SAP and IGF1‐SAP). Those hybrid nanofibers stimulated cellular growth of primary mouse neurons.
