Intracytoplasmic flagellum in trypanosomatids

European Journal of Protistology, 1990
Electron microscopy of thin sections and detergent extracted preparations of certain trypanosomatids of the genus Phytomonas revealed the unusual presence in some flagellates of an intracytoplasmic flagellum which appears as a naked axoneme encircling the nucleus before emerging at the anterior end of the cell.

Flagellum Mediates Symbiosis

Science, 2009
We report here molecular mechanisms underlying a bacteria-archaeon symbiosis. We found that a fermentative bacterium used its flagellum for interaction with a specific methanogenic archaeon. The archaeon perceived a bacterial flagellum protein and activated its metabolism (methanogenesis).
