The Effects of Forcing Direction on the Flame Transfer Function of a Lean-Burn Spray Flame
Volume 3B: Combustion, Fuels, and Emissions, 2021Abstract The flame transfer function (FTF) of an industrial lean-burn fuel injector has been computed using large eddy simulation (LES) and compared to experimental measurements using the multi-microphone technique and OH* measurements.

Validation of Flame Transfer Function Reconstruction for Perfectly Premixed Swirl Flames
Volume 1: Turbo Expo 2004, 2004The introduction of lean premix combustion increases the susceptibility of the combustor to thermoacoustic instabilities. To control these instabilities, information about the dynamic behavior of the combustion process is necessary. The flame transfer function offers one possibility to describe the dynamic behavior of the combustion process. It relates

Flame Transfer Functions for Turbulent, Premixed, Ammonia-Hydrogen-Nitrogen-Air Flames
Volume 3B: Combustion, Fuels, and Emissions, 2022Abstract Ammonia is a promising hydrogen and energy carrier but also a challenging fuel to use in gas turbines, due to its low flame speed, limited flammability range, and the production of NOx from fuel-bound nitrogen. Previous experimental and theoretical work has demonstrated that partially-dissociated ammonia (NH3/H2/N2 mixtures) can

Modeling of premixed swirling flames transfer functions
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2011Abstract An analytical model is derived for the linear response of swirling flames submitted to velocity disturbances. The flame dynamics is represented by a linearized version of the G-equation. Turbulent fluctuations are first averaged in time to obtain a kinematic equation in which the flame is represented by a wrinkled sheet.

The transfer function of premixed turbulent jet flames
Symposium (International) on Combustion, 1971For low-frequency pressure oscillations in combustion chambers, the transfer function of the flame is an important parameter. This transfer function represents the dependence between the burned and injected mass-flow rate on the pressure oscillations. The stability region of a system can be defined only if the transfer function is known. In this paper,

On the low-frequency limit of flame transfer functions
Combustion and Flame, 2007The response of a premixed flame to quasi-steady flow perturbations is considered. It is found that in this low-frequency limit, constraints on the flame transfer function can be established from global conservation laws for mass, energy, and momentum.

Flame Transfer Function Calculations for Combustion Oscillations
Volume 2: Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Combustion and Fuels; Oil and Gas Applications; Cycle Innovations, 2001Combustors with fuel-spray atomisers are particularly susceptible to a low-frequency oscillation at idle and sub-idle conditions. For aero-engine combustors, the frequency of this oscillation is typically in the range 50-120Hz and is commonly called ‘rumble’.

Thermo Acoustic Flame Transfer Function Prediction for Turbulent Non-Premixed Syngas Flames
Volume 1: Combustion and Fuels, Education, 2006The thermo-acoustic behaviour of non-premixed turbulent syngas flames is investigated by means of transient RaNS Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. Three cases with two different fuel compositions are considered. Both fuels are combusted in a turbulent non-premixed swirl stabilised mode, and are mixtures of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen.

Theoretical and experimental determinations of the transfer function of a laminar premixed flame
Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2000The dynamical behavior of laminar premixed flames is investigated in this article. The flame response to incident perturbations is characterized with a transfer function relating the flow velocity modulations and the heat release fluctuations. This function is obtained using the assumptions introduced in previous studies by Fleifil et al., but the ...

Effect of Flame Structure on the Flame Transfer Function in a Premixed Gas Turbine Combustor
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2008The flame transfer function in a premixed gas turbine combustor is experimentally determined. The fuel (natural gas) is premixed with air upstream of a choked inlet to the combustor. Therefore, the input to the flame transfer function is the imposed velocity fluctuations of the fuel/air mixture without equivalence ratio fluctuations. The inlet-velocity
