Wing–Wake Interaction of Three-Dimensional Flapping Wings

AIAA Journal, 2017
Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate the effects of acceleration and deceleration durations on the wake capture effects on three-dimensional fruit-fly-inspired flapping ...

The Fowler Wing Flap

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1936
THE design of aerofoils, after years of research, has about reached its maximum development. The comprehensive research of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has resulted in several new highly efficient aerofoils. The systematic nature of this research indicates that the possibility of further marked improvement is remote, and would be of ...

“Wing-flapping” develops in wingless chicks

Behavioral and Neural Biology, 1979
“Wing-flapping” of 13-day-old chicks (Gallus domesticus) that had both wings amputated on the day after hatching was made visible by attaching limb prostheses (soda straws) to the stumps of the amputated wings. Typical drop-evoked, bilaterally symmetrical “wing-flapping” movements of a rate similar to that of the wings of intact control chicks were ...

Wing Performance Characterization for Flapping Wing Air Vehicles

Volume 6B: 37th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, 2013
Flapping wing air vehicles offer many useful flight characteristics due to their versatility, as proven by flying animals. Wing design significantly influences the performance. However designing successful wings presents significant challenges. Efficient matching of the drive motors to the flapping wings is necessary to overcome the highly constrained ...

Flap Your Wings for Goodbye

Canadian-American Slavic Studies, 2021
Abstract The present article explicates a selection of bird imagery in Sasha Sokolov’s second novel, Between Dog and Wolf (1980). It analyzes the author’s use of certain birds and their folkloric and mythological subtexts for symbolic purposes. In particular, he pairs his protagonists with key birds (hoopoe, lapwing, goose, magpie, albatross) to ...

Wing flap aerodynamic noise suppression

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1992
An arrangement for suppressing aerodynamic noise generated by cavity effect interaction between a wing flap shroud and one or more partially deployed trailing edge flaps. Noise suppression vanes are so positioned with respect to the shroud lower trailing edge and the leading edge of the wing flaps at partial deployment that eddies and vortices ...

Numerical Study of Flapping Wing

33rd AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2003
A numerical method is developed to solve the solutions of the Euler/Navier-Stokes equations for investigating the flowfileds of the flapping wings. It uses a third-order modified Osher-Chakravarthy (MOC) upwind finite-volume scheme for the convective terms and a second-order central finite-volume scheme for the viscous terms.

Compliant Multifunctional Wing Structures for Flapping Wing MAVs

The flight time of miniature air vehicles (MAVs) is limited by the need for a portable, light weight power source. The development of multifunctional, power generating wings has the capability of extending flight time without compromising overall flight performance.
