The effect of wing flexibility on sound generation of flapping wings
Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2017In this study, the unsteady flow and acoustic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) flapping wing model of a Tibicen linnei cicada in forward-flight are numerically investigated. A single cicada wing is modelled as a membrane with a prescribed motion reconstructed from high-speed videos of a live insect.

Aerodynamics of flapping wings with passive and active deformation
International audienceThis paper reports direct numerical simulations of the flow past rigid and flexible flapping wings under hovering flight conditions. Both passive and active deformations are considered.

IT seems rather strange that while the general property of wing flaps of putting up both the lift and the drag of a wing at the same time has been known for many years, so little practical application of this result has been made until quite recently.

A wing characterization method for flapping-wing robotic insects
2013 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2013This paper presents a wing characterization method for insect-scale flapping-wing robots. A quasi-steady model is developed to predict passive wing pitching at mid-stroke. Millimeter scale wings and passive hinges are manufactured using the SCM fabrication processes.

Aerodynamical Improvement of Delta Wing and Flapping Wing
Volume 1A: Symposia, Part 2, 2015Recently, various studies of Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) and Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) have been reported from wide range points of view. The aim of this study are researching the aerodynamic improvement of delta wing and flapping wing in low Reynold’s number region to develop an applicative these air vehicle.

Translational damping on flapping cicada wings
2011 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2011We measured the dynamic damping of a pair of flapping cicada wings mounted on a robotic insect thorax mechanism capable of high frequency flapping. The damping coefficients were derived based on the measurements of the wing-thorax mechanism translating along its body principal axes.

A Testing Platform for Flapping-Wing Robots
2020 5th International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics (ICARM), 2020The validation and optimization of the design of flapping-wing robots (FWRs) are difficult. The wind-tunnel instrument usually used in the performance testing of FWRs is expensive. This work introduces a simple and low-cost testing platform that can be conveniently used to test the FWRs.

Optical flow on a flapping wing robot
2009 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2009Optical flow sensing techniques are promising for obstacle avoidance, distance regulation, and moving target tracking, particularly for small mobile robots with limited power and payload constraints. Most optical flow sensing experimental work has been done on mobile platforms which are relatively steady in rotation, unlike the pitching motion expected

THE design of aerofoils, after years of research, has about reached its maximum development. The comprehensive research of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has resulted in several new highly efficient aerofoils. The systematic nature of this research indicates that the possibility of further marked improvement is remote, and would be of ...
