On the benefits of multi-path recovery in flexgrid optical networks

open access: yesPhotonic Network Communications, 2014
We propose a new recovery scheme, called multi-path recovery (MPR), specifically designed for flexgrid-based optical networks. It combines protection and restoration schemes to jointly recover, in part or totally, the bitrate requested by client demands in case of failure.

How national IP/MPLS networks can benefit from flexgrid optical technology? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We design a 1113-node network and show that the optimum is a large Flexgrid core serving small metro areas.

Power Excursion Mitigation for Flexgrid Defragmentation With Machine Learning

open access: yesJournal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2017
Flexgrid optical networking relies on spectrum defragmentation to groom channel wavelengths and improve spectral efficiency. Various defragmentation methods—hop, make-before-break, and sweep—interact with the power dynamics of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) differently and result in undesired power excursions that exacerbate the post-EDFA power ...

Serving Multicast Requests on Single-Layer and Multilayer Flexgrid Networks

open access: yesJournal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2015
Advanced services require a high bitrate, e.g., multigigabit, multicast connectivity beingprovided by core transport networks. Multicast services can be supported either by one single tree connecting the source to every destination of the multicast request or by a set of paths.

Solving Large Instances of the RSA Problem in Flexgrid Elastic Optical Networks [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2016
We present an optimization procedure that mixes advanced large-scale optimization methods and heuristics to solve large instances (with over 1.7 million integer variables) of the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) problem-a basic optimization problem in flexgrid elastic optical networks.

An in-operation planning tool architecture for flexgrid network re-optimization

open access: yes2014 16th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2014
In-operation network planning consists in re-optimizing a network, currently being operated to transport traffic, either minimizing resource utilization or maximizing the transported traffic. In the context of flexgrid optical networks re-optimization includes spectrum defragmentation, virtual topology reconfiguration, etc.

Multiple Fiber, Flexgrid Elastic Optical Network Design using MaxEnt Optimization

open access: yes, 2015
We demonstrate how maximum entropy (MaxEnt) allocation strategies can optimally determine links within a flexgrid elastic optical network requiring multiple fiber-pairs to support 100% capacity growth with 34.3% improvement in the uniformity of spectrum ...

First experimental demonstration of ABNO-driven in-operation flexgrid network re-optimization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The after failure repair optimization problem is used to experimentally validate in-operation planning using the ABNO architecture to control a flexgrid optical network.

Mapping time-varying IP traffic to flexible optical paths in flexgrid optical networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A spectrum slot is the frequency range allocated to a single channel within a flexible grid, and its width needs to be an integer multiple of the so-called slot width granularity.
