Polarization patterning in ferroelectric nematic liquids via flexoelectric coupling

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
The recently discovered ferroelectric nematic liquids incorporate to the functional combination of fluidity, processability and anisotropic optical properties of nematic liquids, an astonishing range of physical properties derived from the phase polarity.

Direct Observation of Huge Flexoelectric Polarization around Crack Tips [PDF]

open access: yesNano Letters, 2019
Flexoelectricity is especially relevant for nanoscale structures, and it is expected to be largest at the tip of cracks. We demonstrate the presence of a huge flexoelectric polarization at crack tips in SrTiO3 by direct observation with scanning transmission electron microscopy.

Flexoelectric Effect of Ferroelectric Materials and Its Applications

open access: yesActuators, 2023
The flexoelectric effect, which exists in all dielectrics, is an electromechanical effect that arises due to the coupling of strain gradients (or electric field gradients) with electric polarization (or mechanical stress).

Giant Flexoelectric Polarization in a Micromachined Ferroelectric Diaphragm

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, 2012
AbstractThe coupling between dielectric polarization and strain gradient, known as flexoelectricity, becomes significantly large on the micro‐ and nanoscale. Here, it is shown that giant flexoelectric polarization can reverse remnant ferroelectric polarization in a bent Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) diaphragm fabricated by micromachining.

Flexoelectric polarization studies in bent-core nematic liquid crystals

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2015
The flexoelectric polarization (Pf) of four bent-core nematic liquid crystals (LCs) has been measured using the pyroelectric effect. Hybrid aligned nematic cells are fabricated for measuring the pyroelectric response over the entire range of the nematic phase.

Surface and flexoelectric polarization in a nematic liquid crystal 5CB

open access: yesThe European Physical Journal E, 2001
The temperature dependence of the surface polarization has been measured for both the planar and homeotropic orientation of a nematic liquid crystal at a solid substrate. A conventional liquid crystal 5CB, pure and doped with an azo-dye, was used in cells with controlled asymmetry for light absorption.

Flexoelectric domain walls enable charge separation and transport in cubic perovskites [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
The exceptional energy-harvesting efficiency of lead-halide perovskites arises from unusually long photocarrier diffusion lengths and recombination lifetimes that persist even in defect-rich, solution-grown samples.

Flexoelectric Polarization in a Nematic Liquid Crystal Enhanced by Dopants with Different Molecular Shape Polarities. [PDF]

open access: yesACS Omega, 2022
Flexoelectricity may have an important impact on the switching properties of nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals due to the linear coupling between the flexoelectric polarization of the liquid crystal and the applied electric field. This coupling is the origin of the extraordinary electro-optic effect in cholesterics aligned in the uniform lying ...

Flexoelectricity-driven giant polarization in (Bi, Na)TiO3-based ferroelectric thin films [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
This study demonstrates the use of oxygen vacancy-induced planar defects to significantly enhance electrical polarization through a local flexoelectric effect.
