Reconfigurable Soft Flexure Hinges via Pinched Tubes
2020 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2020Tuning the stiffness of soft robots is essential in order to extend usability and control the maneuverability of soft robots. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism that can reconfigure the stiffness of tubular structures, using pinching to induce highly directional changes in stiffness.

Lumped-Parameter Inertia Model for Flexure Hinges
Mechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines, 2004Abstract The article describes the analysis to derive the lumped-parameter inertia properties for variable cross-section flexure hinges for potential use in modeling, designing, and optimizing of these components in the resonant/dynamic range. Inertia fractions corresponding to one of the flexure's 6 degrees of freedom are formulated for single-, two-,

Space focusing mirror assembly with flexure hinges
SPIE Proceedings, 2014Focusing mirror assembly (FMA) is an important component of large space telescope. It can compensate the telescope's defocus caused by environmental factors. Telescope launching vibration and shock, as well as the structure stress of kinematic movement have great impact on focusing mirror assembly. To solve the problems of defocus result from vibration,

Notch flexure hinges: An effective theory
Review of Scientific Instruments, 2002This article presents effective tractable equations for rotational compliance (stiffness) of a simple monolithic flexure hinge with circular (radius R and crosspiece thickness t), elliptical [at semiaxis ax, ay, elliptical ratio ε (=ax/ay)] and other cross sections.

Piezomotors using flexure hinged displacement amplifiers
IEE Colloquium on `Innovative Actuators for Mechatronic Systems', 1995The design and construction of two different piezomotors developed by the authors is briefly described. Both employ flexure hinged mechanical displacement amplifiers to increase the output movement of stack-type piezoelectric actuators to enable them to be applied to rotation generating mechanisms. The first example is a harmonic piezomotor.

Displacement loss of flexure-hinged amplifying mechanism
The Proceedings of the Multiconference on "Computational Engineering in Systems Applications", 2006The amplifying factor is utilized to study displacement loss of flexure-hinged amplifying mechanism in the paper. Firstly, the amplifying factors of three typical amplifying mechanisms are theoretically calculated. Then, the actual amplifying factor of lever-type amplifying mechanism, which is widely used, is detailedly simulated by using parametric ...

Micropositioning System with Flexure Hinges for Microfactories
Key Engineering Materials, 2013In this paper it is presented a ductile system for micropositioning in a two-dimensional coordinate system. Accuracy positioning results from usage of asymmetric flexure hinges. It also it is presented the modeling of the asymmetric flexure hinges, finite element analysis, and experimental work.

Optimized High-Precision Flexural Hinge Shapes
2006Results of a strength-based optimisation of flexural hinge shapes are given. Both pre-defined and freeform parametric shapes are considered. By employing non-linear parametric optimisation algorithms, shapes that are best suited for the desired applications are determined.

Flexure Hinge Based Fully Compliant Prosthetic Finger
2017A prosthetic hand is usually made by rigid body mechanism with ropes and pulleys. Such a hand is not “soft” to patients and nor to objects to be manipulated by the hand. In this paper, the concept of compliant mechanism is applied to a prosthetic hand.
