Secondary frost heave in freezing soils [PDF]
Frost heave describes the phenomenon whereby soil freezing causes upwards surface motion due to the action of capillary suction imbibing water from the unfrozen region below. The expansion of water on freezing is a small part of the overall surface heave

Floor heave monitoring using floor instrumentation
Several underground coal mines in Australia have recently reported and anticipated significant floor heave in gateroads during longwall retreat. Floor heave on longwall retreat is typically attributed to a stress notch.

Concrete Deterioration and Floor Heave Due to Biogeochemical Weathering of Underlying Shale
When the basement floor of a church in the New Edinburgh area of Ottawa heaved, it was discovered that the concrete under the floor had been reduced to a mushy consistency due to attack by sulfate solution formed by the oxidation of pyrite in the underlying shale. Gypsum was the main product in the weathered zone of the shale. It is shown that heaving

Evaluation of heave prevention methods for floors founded on shale in the Ottawa Region
Heaving of floors founded on black shale in the Ottawa region is due to the oxidation of pyrite in it and the subsequent formation of jarosite and gypsum which crystallize between the layers of the thinly laminated fissile shale causing it to expand. Air must gain access to the shale for the oxidation reaction to occur.
