Floral Specialization: what do floral attributes and floral visitors tell us?

open access: yes, 2022
Abstract Floral traits may either facilitate or constrain the gathering of food resources by certain animals. We therefore sought here to define the floral specialization levels of 19 plant species visited by foraging insects, based on their floral attributes and on the behaviors of their respective insect visitors.

Characterizing the nectar microbiome of the non-native tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica, in an urban environment.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
In increasingly urban landscapes, the loss of native pollen and nectar floral resources is impacting ecologically important pollinators. Increased urbanization has also brought about the rise of urban gardens which introduce new floral resources that may

Effects of floral metal accumulation on floral visitor communities: Introducing the elemental filter hypothesis [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 2015
• Premise of the study: For plant species that occur in heavy‐metal‐rich soil, floral metal accumulation may produce an “elemental filter” that reduces pollinator visitation rate and species richness and changes pollinator species composition relative to closely related species growing on normal soils.

Flowering phenology and flower visitors of the Macana Palm Wettinia kalbreyeri (Arecaceae) in an Andean montane forest

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2017
The study of floral phenology patterns and floral visitors of palms is key to understanding evolutionary interactions between plants and insects. We studied the flowering pattern and floral visitors of Wettinia kalbreyeri in an Andean montane forest of ...

Pollinators and floral visitors of two orchids in a protected natural area in Tuxpan, Veracruz

open access: yesEcosistemas y Recursos Agropecuarios, 2019
Floral visitors, particularly pollinators, are important during the life cycle of many orchids. However, despite their biological importance, this information is still unknown in many species, particularly those in mangrove forests.

Floral biology of candeia (Eremanthus erythropappus, Asteraceae)

open access: yesPesquisa Florestal Brasileira, 2012
Floral biology and pollinators of candeia (Eremanthus erythropappus) were analyzed in a natural population. We studied anthesis, flower morphology, stigmatic receptivity, pollen viability and floral visitors.

The conservation of urban flower visitors Down Under

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Cities, 2023
The majority of the human population now lives in urban environments and that proportion is forecast to increase dramatically by 2050. As urbanization increases, the urban environment will increasingly play a role in biodiversity conservation.

An exploratory study of the functional significance of the floral secretory structures in two Miconia species (Melastomataceae) [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Aiming to verify whether the diversity of secretory structures with their respective exudates are or not responsible for the attendance of floral visitors in Miconia species, the floral secretory structures of two Amazonian species of Miconia were ...

How pollinator visits are affected by flower damage and ants presence in Ipomoea carnea subs. fistulosa (Martius and Choise) (Convolvulaceae)?

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2019
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of florivory and of the patrolling ants associated to EFNs-extrafloral nectaries, on the frequency of floral visitors, using the specie Ipomoea carnea subs. fistulosa (Martius and Choise) in Caatinga area.

DISRUPTION OF A BELOWGROUND MUTUALISM ALTERS INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PLANTS AND THEIR FLORAL VISITORS [PDF]

open access: yesEcology, 2008
Plants engage in diverse and intimate interactions with unrelated taxa. For example, aboveground. oral visitors provide pollination services, while belowground arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) enhance nutrient capture. Traditionally in ecology, these processes were studied in isolation, reinforcing the prevailing assumption that these above- and ...
