A simple model of flow-induced crystallization memory

Macromolecular Symposia, 2002
Flow induced crystallization of polymer systems exhibits strong memory effects. Crystalline structures gradually change when the flow is switched off and the polymer is relaxed prior to crystallization. A simple model based on the multidimensional theory of crystal nucleation [1] is proposed.

Flow-induced crystallization

2013
Molecular properties are reflected in the rheological and crystallization behavior. The first task is to design and use some well‐defined experiments that reveal all these features. Second, the experimental findings should be translated into mathematically formulated physical models, suited to be implemented in numerical codes for simulation

A recoverable strain-based model for flow‐induced crystallization

Macromolecular Symposia, 2002
A model for the combined processes of quiescent and flow-induced crystallization of polymers is presented. This modeling should provide the necessary input data, in terms of the structure distribution in a product, for the prediction of mechanical properties and shape- and dimensional-stability. The model is partly based on the work of Schneider et al.

Mechanisms of flow induced crystallization

Polymer Engineering & Science, 1982
AbstractThis paper presents a review of the field of flow induced crystallization from solution. Experimental facts concerning the nature of fibrous nucleation and the “shishkebob” morphology which results are reviewed. The discussion of growth models emphasizes the details of the nucleation control and flow control calculations which have been ...

Flow field induced crystallization of multicomponent colloids

Physical Review E
Field-directed assembly presents a powerful approach for directing the organization of colloidal particles into long-range crystalline orderings. While their ability to tune colloidal crystallization has been widely studied, insights into how they mediate the formation of such structures remain an open question.

Flow Induced Crystallization of Colloidal Dispersion

ASME-JSME-KSME 2011 Joint Fluids Engineering Conference: Volume 1, Symposia – Parts A, B, C, and D, 2011
In this study, we have examined a crystallization effect of colloidal dispersion induced by the various elongational flows. Extremely strong electrostatic repulsion makes a crystal structure called ‘colloid crystal’. A colloid crystal has hundreds of nano-meters in grating scale and it reflects the visible light due to the Bragg diffraction. It has the

Modeling flow induced crystallization in film casting of polypropylene

Rheologica Acta, 2004
Data from iPP film casting experiments served as a basis to model the effect of flow on polymer crystallization kinetics. These data describe the temperature, width, velocity and crystallinity distributions along the drawing direction under conditions permitting crystallization along the draw length.

An analysis of local flow effects in flow‐induced orientation and crystallization

Journal of Polymer Science: Polymer Physics Edition, 1983
AbstractAn analysis is presented of the effects of external flow kinematics on the so‐called local flow in seeded, flow‐induced crystallization and orientation. The flow field around a growing crystal or nucleation seed is modelled by the Stokes flow equations past a prolate ellipsoid of high aspect ratio.

Transition in Crystal Morphology for Flow-Induced Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene

Macromolecules, 2016
Deformation applied to a semicrystalline polymer melt prior to quenching can dramatically increase the concentration of nuclei and even transform the final crystalline morphology, phenomena collectively known as flow-induced crystallization (FIC). Using polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we image the changes in morphology of an ...

Flow-induced crystallization using a static mixer crystallizer

Separation and Purification Technology
Inland desalination benefits from concentrate minimization. We present initial results using an inline static mixer crystallizer (SM) to accelerate crystallization of supersaturated CaCO3 from a model reverse osmosis desalination process' concentrate.
