Flow transitions in two-dimensional foams

open access: yes, 2006
For sufficiently slow rates of strain, flowing foam can exhibit inhomogeneous flows. The nature of these flows is an area of active study in both two-dimensional model foams and three dimensional foam. Recent work in three-dimensional foam has identified

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

THE FLOW OF RAPE SEED IN A SILO EQUIPPED WITH A DISCHARGE DEVICE

open access: yesTASK Quarterly, 2003
The paper contains a review of experiments with rape seed in a model silo with a semicircular flat bottom equipped with a low-height discharge device. Observations of flow patterns were made during filling and discharging through the transparent front ...

Volume flow rate

open access: yesPerspectives in Medicine, 2012
SummaryVascular imaging of carotid and vertebral arteries may not be sufficient to evaluate the patients with stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders. Cerebral blood flow measurement can add information to increase the accuracy in diagnosis, assessment, and plan of management in these patients.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Design and Analysis of a High Force, Low Voltage and High Flow Rate Electro-Thermal Micropump

open access: yesMicromachines, 2014
This paper presents the design and simulation of an improved electro-thermal micromachined pump for drug delivery applications. Thermal actuators, which are a type of Micro Electro Mechanical system (MEMS) device, are highly useful because of their ...

Self-averaging property of queuing systems

open access: yes, 2005
We establish the averaging property for a queuing process with one server, M(t)/GI/1. It is a new relation between the output flow rate and the input flow rate, crucial in the study of the Poisson Hypothesis.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
