Time, Structure, and Fluctuations [PDF]

open access: possibleScience, 1978
Fundamental conceptual problems that arise from the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the second law of thermodynamics are considered. It is shown that nonequilibrium may become a source of order and that irreversible processes may lead to a new type of dynamic states of matter called "dissipative structures." The thermodynamic theory of such ...

On the Fluctuations of the Giant Component

Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2000
We provide an alternate proof of the central limit theorem for the uctuations of the size of the giant component in sparse random graphs. In contrast with previous proofs, the argument investigates a depth-first search algorithm, through first-passage analysis using couplings and martingale limit theorems. The analysis of the first passage limiting

Fluctuations and Fracture

Physical Review Letters, 1995
This Letter describes the way that metastable systems escape from traps. Brief periods during which the system apparently runs backwards in time play a crucial role. These ideas are applied to a model for one of nature's most obviously irreversible phenomena, the shattering of a body by a crack.

Fluctuation in Living Cells: Effect of Field Fluctuation and Asymmetry of Fluctuation

1987
The electric potential in living cells of paramecium shows large spontaneous fluctuation, which consists of basic fluctuation and spikelike fluctuation. The spikelike fluctuation triggers transient reversal of ciliary beating and causes discontinuous change of the swimming direction.

[Motor fluctuations]

Revue neurologique, 2003
The therapeutic approach of motor fluctuations is based on the need for recognizing various types of motor fluctuations for each patient by a meticulous interrogation and also to have a good knowledge of the pharmacology of the various anti-parkinsonian drugs.
