Fluctuation Theory of Luminance and Chromaticity Discrimination*

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of America, 1963
An attempt has been made to describe brightness and color discrimination in the framework of a fluctuation theory. The fluctuation theory states that a difference between two stimuli will be just noticeable if it exceeds, by some factor, the average of the fluctuations in the stimuli. If the statistical fluctuations in the number of quanta absorbed are

Ensemble transformation in the fluctuation theory [PDF]

open access: yesPhysica A: Statistical Mechanics and Its Applications, 2022
Interactions in complex solutions that consist of multiple components can be quantified via number correlations observed within an isochoric subsystem.

Macroscopic fluctuation theory [PDF]

open access: yesReviews of Modern Physics, 2015
Stationary non-equilibrium states describe steady flows through macroscopic systems. Although they represent the simplest generalization of equilibrium states, they exhibit a variety of new phenomena. Within a statistical mechanics approach, these states

Fluctuation–dissipation: Response theory in statistical physics

open access: yesPhysics Reports, 2008
General aspects of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Relation (FDR), and Response Theory are considered. After analyzing the conceptual and historical relevance of fluctuations in statistical mechanics, we illustrate the relation between the relaxation of ...

Theory of Fluctuations in Pseudointegrable Systems

Physical Review Letters, 1993
We provide a sum rule for the length spectrum of pseudointegrable systems in terms of the quantal energies. Further, we derive an expression for the form factor and infer the dependence of spectral fluctuations on the geometry of the system. Our analysis allows us to explain various numerical results obtained in recent years.

Theory of Fluctuations in Superconductors

2005
Abstract This book presents itself as both an encyclopedia and a textbook of fluctuation phenomena in superconductors. The first half presents the phenomenological methods of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and microscopical methods of the quantum field theory in the description of fluctuations. The second half provides a wide panorama of the

A Theory of Commodity Price Fluctuations

Journal of Political Economy, 1996
This paper studies the price fluctuations of storable commodities that are traded in open markets and are subject to random shocks to demand or, more particularly, to supply. It relaxes the common assumption that the shocks are identically and independently distributed in favor of temporally dependent and periodic disturbances.
