Flucytosine is a systemic antifungal drug that is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The most clearly documented therapeutic effect has been in cryptococcosis, candidiasis, and chromomycosis. An important limitation of the use of flucytosine in all three diseases has been drug resistance arising during therapy.

Flucytosine (5-fluorocytosine; 5FC; Alcobon - Roche) is a synthetic antifungal drug which is active when given orally. It is an analogue of the pyrimidine base cytosine, and probably acts by being deaminated to 5-fluorouracil which behaves as a pyrimidine antimetabolite during nucleic acid synthesis.1

Orally administered flucytosine appeared to successfully eradicate chromomycosis in three patients. The duration of therapy should be adequate for complete clinical and mycological evidence of cure. Flucytosine is easily administered and the untoward effects are minor, infrequent, and easily reversible.

Abstract Flucytosine (5-fluorocytosine; 5-flucytosine; 5-FC) is one of the oldest antifungal agents in use (Utz, 1972). It was initially synthesized in 1957, but was not discovered to possess significant antifungal properties until 1964, when activity against Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida species was shown (Grunmberg et al, 1964 ...

CRYSTALLURIA DURING FLUCYTOSINE THERAPY
Medical Journal of Australia, 1979A case of urinary crystalluria occurring in a patient during treatment with flucytosine (5-fluorocytosine) is presented. A reduction in the dosage of the 5-fluorocytosine resulted in a marked decrease in the excretion of urinary gravel which was shown to be a coprecipitate of 5-fluorocytosine and uric acid.

Flucytosine (5-fluorocytosine)
Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 1987Monitoring of flucytosine (5-FC) concentration in serum is of great importance. It may be anticipated that demand for this service will increase in the near future, because this drug is used in situations involving immunocompromised patients, including those afflicted with AIDS.
