The Physics of the Organ Flue Pipe

American Journal of Physics, 1953
This is a review article in which the physical principles underlying the function of the organ flue pipe are considered. Many of the points are not understood, and attention is called to them as possible lines of investigation. A survey is made of the various theories of the action of the airstream at the mouth of the pipe; details are given of the ...

Wall Vibrations in Flue Organ Pipes and Their Effect on Tone

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1966
The question of the effect of wall vibrations on the tone of an organ flue pipe is examined theoretically and experimentally. The effect of nonrigid walls is calculated and it is shown that, if they do not affect the pipe frequency, they do not radiate appreciably.

A combined LDA and flow-visualization study on flue organ pipes

Experiments in Fluids, 2006
Temporally resolved schlieren flow visualization and Laser-Doppler Anemometry (LDA) measurements have been performed on real flue organ pipes during the stationary state as well as during the attack transient. The techniques prove highly efficient in providing information on the details of the flow.

Tuning and temperament in organ flue pipes

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982
The scaling of ranks of organ flue pipes to produce a coherent, characteristic, and tonally balanced ensemble is a problem which has confronted organ builders for many centuries, but the temperament used to tune these pipes has likewise been of concern.

Sound production of flue organ pipes

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1999
For understanding the sound production of flue organ pipes, the acoustic properties of the two main components, the acoustic resonator and the air jet generator at the labium (flue + upper lip), have been investigated separately. It was found that the formant structure of the stationary sound spectrum is mostly determined by the geometry of the pipe ...

Mode transition of a flue organ pipe

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008
A flue organ pipe can be excited in various acoustic modes by changing the air pressure supplied to it. This research aims to reconstruct this behavior from the result of numerical flow simulation of a jet deflected by sound and from physical modeling simulation of the total sound production system.

Imaging standing waves in the resonator of a flue organ pipe

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2022
The acoustic standing wave inside a transparent flue organ pipe has been imaged using transmission electronic speckle pattern interferometry (TESPI). Optically imaging acoustic standing waves in a pipe requires sensing the pressure-induced change in index of refraction of the air, and imaging this change in index has been accomplished in the past using
