Development of a fluid-structure model for gas-lubricated bump-type foil thrust bearings

open access: yes, 2016
In the present study, a computational model for the coupled fluid-structure simulation of bump-type foil thrust bearings is developed. A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver is extended to model the fluid flow within the thin gap.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Analysis of downwind sail structures using non-linear shell finite elements: wrinkle development and fluid interaction effects

open access: yes, 2012
Downwind yacht sails are subjected to fluid structure interaction effects which can slightly change the initial design shape, with a direct impact on the overall performances.

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Fluid coupling between the elements in a discrete model of cochlear mechanics

open access: yes, 2010
When analysing the coupled mechanics of the cochlea, due to the interaction between fluid coupling and basilar membrane motion, it is convenient to divide the cochlea longitudinally into a discrete number of sections.

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

21st Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference (AFMC 2018)

open access: yes, 2018
Fluid Structure Interactions (FSI), if not managed appropriately are known to have contributed to the loss of several aerospace vehicles. As done for the X-43, FSI can be designed-out by making structures sufficiently rigid and by providing appropriate ...

Unsteady Flow and Vibration Analysis of the Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine Blade under the Fluid-Structure Interaction

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2019
A 1.5 MW horizontal-axis wind turbine blade and fluid field model are established to study the difference in the unsteady flow field and structural vibration of the wind turbine blade under one- and two-way fluid-structure interactions.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.
