Instability of Rotors in Fluid Film Bearings

Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 1983
This paper is concerned with instability of a rotor that arises due to fluid film forces of a journal bearing. The half frequency whirl and the resulting oil whip phenomena is explained by a consideration of flow balance in a bearing which looses the load carrying capacity.

Fluid film bearing material advances

World Pumps, 2017
Bearing life can impact pump production while bearing performance can affect pump efficiency. This article examines how advances in fluid film bearing materials allow pump manufacturers and users to continue to improve operation.

Fundamentals of Fluid Film Journal Bearing Operation and Modeling

2005
Widely used in turbomachinery, the fluid film journal bearing is critical to a machine’s overall reliability level. Their design complexity and application severity continue to increase making it challenging for the plant machinery engineer to evaluate their reliability.

Stress analysis of fluid film bearings [PDF]

open access: possible, 2000
The Finite Element Method is used to investigate the influence of the stiffness of the housing and the backing, as well as the thickness of the antifriction lining on stresses due to lubricant film pressure in two-layered precision insert bearings. These factors are expected to affect the fatigue life of the bearings.

Bifurcation of limit cycles in fluid film bearings

International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 2011
Abstract Rotors supported by journal bearings may become unstable due to self-excited vibrations when a critical rotor speed is exceeded. Linearised analysis is usually used to determine the stability boundaries. Non-linear bifurcation theory or numerical integration is required to predict stable or unstable periodic oscillations close to the ...

Developments in Fluid Film Bearing Technology

2010
This paper presents some new developments in Fluid Film Bearing (FFB) technology. The phenomena of oil whirl and oil whip leading to instability in FFB supported rotors; limit the performance of rotating machinery. This paper presents some new developments that affect the instability threshold, namely the positive effect of angular misalignment on the ...

Transient thermoelastic effects in fluid film bearings

Wear, 1982
Abstract A method is presented for the calculation of temperature in the shoe-film-rotor assembly of a thrust bearing. This method allows reverse flow to occur and simplifies the calculation of hot oil carry-over. An analysis is developed to propagate thermoelastic effects in time following a change in any operating condition such as load or speed ...

On the stability of Jeffcott rotor in fluid-film bearings

Computer assisted mechanics and engineering sciences, 2002
For some combinations of rotor speed radial load, the pressure of bearig fluid can perturb the pure rotational motion and disturb the normal operation of rotating machine. Classical approach to the stability analysis of Jeffcott rotor in fluid-film bearings is modelling bearings as spring-damper elements and disregarding the external rotor damping ...

Dynamic Coefficients for Fluid Film Journal Bearings

1990
An analysis for deriving the stiffness and damping coefficients of a journal bearing is presented. It is based on a Pertubation solution of the lubrication equation (Reynold’s equation) where the resulting partial differential equations are evaluated numerically.
