Abstract Surgical patients require careful attention to their fluid balance. Several factors alter fluid and electrolyte requirements. Patients who are nil-by-mouth after major surgery cannot depend on thirst to regulate body fluids. They rely solely on i/v fluids to maintain their fluid balance.

This chapter will tell you how surgery affects fluid balance and how the body controls fluids. Fluid compartments in the body and the nature of fluids are described. Disorders of fluid balance, the use of fluids to restore blood volume, and extra cellular fluid volume are all discussed.

Assessment and careful maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance in patients is an essential part of the nurse's role. This article explores fluid and electrolyte balance with reference to the normal physiology of body fluids and regulation of fluids and electrolytes. It also considers some common conditions associated with fluid imbalance.

Preoperative fluid balance assessment
AORN Journal, 1981Careful assessment before surgery can help avoid serious fluid and electrolyte complications after surgery. Information can be gained by physical assessment and review of the health history and laboratory data. The patient has a much better chance of withstanding surgery if any volume or electrolyte concentration imbalances are detected and corrected ...

The rate of metabolic heat production during prolonged exercise may be increased to 15-20 times that at rest. Evaporation of sweat secreted onto the skin can effectively limit the rise in body temperature which would otherwise occur, but results in the loss of water and electrolytes from the body.

Abstract The body, in broad terms, is divided into intra- and extracellular fluid compartments, of which the extracellular consists of intravascular and interstitial compartments. The osmotic pressure of all of these compartments is equal, but their composition is different.
