Hydration Status and Fluid Needs of Division I Female Collegiate Athletes Exercising Indoors and Outdoors

open access: yesSports, 2019
The purpose was to determine differences in acute and chronic hydration status in female student-athletes (n = 40) practicing in moderate, dry conditions (17−25 °C, 30−57% humidity) indoors and outdoors.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Transport relations for surface integrals arising in the formulation of balance laws for evolving fluid interfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We establish transport relations for integrals over evolving fluid interfaces. These relations make it possible to localize integral balance laws over nonmaterial interfaces separating fluid phases and, therefore, obtain associated interface conditions ...

Fluid balance

open access: yes, 2010
The author describes the signs, symptoms, causes and results of problems with the amount of fluid in the body. Monitoring fluid balance is particularly important when caring for people with cognitive, communication and physical disorders.

Fluid balance versus weighing: A comparison in ICU patients: A single center observational study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
BackgroundThe fluid balance is a critical parameter in intensive care units (ICU) as it provides information about the patient's volume status. However, the accuracy of fluid balance measurements is often compromised due to the complexity and repetition ...

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

The ratio of extracellular water to total body water serves as a potential predictor of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundDiabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a common chronic complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), lacks simple biomarkers for early monitoring.

A study on accuracy and precision of fluid volume measurements by nurses, patients and healthy persons in a clinical setting

open access: yesNursing Open, 2022
Aim To evaluate the accuracy and precision for assessing fluid intake by examining the ability of nurses, patients and healthy people to visually estimate fluid volumes, thereby reflecting the fluid monitoring process in clinical practice. Design A cross‐

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Positive fluid balance and poor outcomes after initial intensive care unit admission in sepsis resuscitation: a retrospective study

open access: yes
Introduction Fluid resuscitation of patients with sepsis is crucial. This study explored the role of fluid balance in the early resuscitation of sepsis patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
