Consent for anaesthesia: guidelines from the Association of Anaesthetists

Summary Introduction Guidelines on consent for anaesthesia were first issued by the Association of Anaesthetists in 1999 and last revised in 2017. These new guidelines respond to the changing ethical, legal and clinical landscape in which anaesthetists practice. Since 2017, the Montgomery judgment has changed medical consent practice.

Pericapsular nerve group block with phenol for non‐operative hip fracture management in patients living with frailty: a prospective multicentre cohort study

Summary Introduction The incidence of hip fractures is rising with the ageing population. For patients living with severe frailty and limited life expectancy, non‐operative management is increasingly considered after shared decision‐making. Given the limited availability of long‐term analgesic options, alternative techniques are needed.

Amputations in Sepsis Patients: A Population‐Based Cohort Study of Rates and Risk Factors

This cohort study of 158 842 sepsis patients revealed that between 2015 and 2021 in NSW, 11 in every 1000 adult sepsis patients and two in every 1000 paediatric sepsis patients underwent amputation. Consensus surrounding the management of VA ECMO and left ventricular mechanical unloading for cardiogenic shock (CS) is limited. We thus conducted a national survey of practice patterns in the treatment of CS to characterize such variability, finding large heterogeneity in CS diagnosis, VA ECMO initiation, and LVMU strategies.

SURGELLA: A Scoping Review of Impella‐Assisted Hemodynamic Support in High‐Risk Non‐Cardiac Surgery

In selected patients with severe LV dysfunction, Impella‐supported non‐cardiac surgery may provide a temporary hemodynamic bridge to otherwise prohibitive procedures. Published evidence remains limited to a small number of highly selected cases, supporting technical feasibility rather than comparative benefit or generalizable safety.
