Phenytoin and Fluorouracil Interaction
Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2001OBJECTIVE: To report a probable drug interaction between phenytoin and fluorouracil. CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old white man started adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer with weekly bolus injections of fluorouracil and leucovorin calcium. He had been taking phenytoin 300 mg/d for epilepsy for more than four years.

Cardiotoxicity of 5-Fluorouracil
Tumori Journal, 1980A case is reported of cardiotoxicity during a multiple drug treatment with fluorouracil, vincristine and CCNU in a patient with a large bowel cancer without any precedent history of heart disease. The patient had chest pain, with an altered ECG and increased serum levels of αHBDH.

GLC Determination of Fluorouracil
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1974A GLC assay method for fluorouracil, based on the flash-methylation technique using trimethylanilinium hydroxide, was developed. It is a convenient, rapid, and sensitive method for the determination in urine and other biological fluids. An ion-exchange recovery method was also developed, using a combination of strong acid and weak base resins and ...

Trabeculectomy with 5‐fluorouracil
Acta Ophthalmologica, 1991Abstract The effect of subconjunctival injection of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) after trabeculectomy was studied retrospectively in 205 eyes of 168 patients. A life table analysis of the surgical outcome was based on the type of glaucoma and age related differences, and a comparison was made with patients who had trabeculectomy without subconjunctival 5‐FU ...

A patient with actinic keratoses was treated with three different fluorouracil preparations topically without the development of reaction. Purposeful exposure to hot sunlight failed to cause any inflammation even though he was applying the fluorouracil at this time.

Desensitization to 5-Fluorouracil
Allergy and Asthma Proceedings, 1999Anaphylactic reactions to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are uncommon. We report a 40-year-old female with adenocarcinoma of the ovary who had two reactions immediately after being infused with 5-FU. The second reaction occurred despite prophylaxis with steroids and antihistamines.

The Prodrugs of 5-Fluorouracil
Current Medicinal Chemistry-Anti-Cancer Agents, 2002Although 5-fluorouracil (FU) was first introduced in 1957, it remains an essential part of the treatment of a wide range of solid tumors. FU has antitumor activity against epithelial malignancies arising in the gastrointestinal tract, breast as well as the head and neck, with single-agent response rates of only 10-30%.

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical manifestations, postulated mechanisms, and therapeutic implications of fluorouracil-induced cardiac toxicity. DATA SOURCE: A MEDLINE search was used to identify pertinent literature. STUDY SELECTION: Studies and case reports on fluorouracil cardiotoxicity were identified through a MEDLINE search.
