Design and Testing of a Flywheel Battery for a Transit Bus [PDF]
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The University of Texas at Austin Center for Electromechanics (UT-CEM) has designed and tested a flywheel energy storage system conventionally referred to as a flywheel battery (FWB) for power averaging on a hybrid electric transit bus. The system incorporates a high speed (40,000 rpm) 150 kW permanent magnet motor

Third Generation Of Flywheels: A Promising Substitute To Batteries [PDF]
A review of flywheels as energy storage systems is organized in three generations. The performance is compared with that of batteries and other energy storage systems in terms of power and energy density. It is shown that a new generation, using magnetic bearings and high speeds (>60000rpm) can substitute batteries in the near future.

A 5‐degrees of freedom hybrid excitation bearingless motor for vehicle flywheel battery
To deal with the restriction of vehicle space on a flywheel battery, a 5‐degrees of freedom (DOF) hybrid excitation bearingless motor (HEBM) was proposed. The 5‐DOF suspension force required for the flywheel battery is provided by HEBM.

Fuel Minimization for a Vehicle Equipped With a Flywheel and Battery on a Three-Dimensional Track [PDF]
An optimal control based methodology is proposed for minimising the combustible fuel consumption of a hybrid vehicle equipped with an internal combustion engine, a high-speed flywheel and a battery. The three-dimensionality of the road is recognised by the optimal control calculations. Fuel efficiency is achieved by optimally exploiting the primary and
