Focal Cortical Dysplasia

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1988
✓ A histologically confirmed case of focal dysplasia of the cerebral cortex is presented. The computerized tomographic, electroencephalographic, pathological, and angiographic findings are discussed with respect to this rare developmental disorder. A review of the literature is presented with a possible etiology for this condition.

Ultra‐Low Level Somatic Mutations and Structural Variations in Focal Cortical Dysplasia Type II

Annals of Neurology, 2023
Brain somatic mutations in mTOR pathway genes are a major genetic etiology of focal cortical dysplasia type II (FCDII). Despite a greater ability to detect low‐level somatic mutations in the brain by deep sequencing and analytics, about 40% of cases ...

Focal Cortical Dysplasia

Archives of Neurology, 2003
Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a type of malformation of cortical development that primarily affects areas of neocortex. It can be identified on conventional magnetic resonance imaging as focal cortical thickening, abnormal gyration, and blurring between gray and white matter, often associated with clusters of heterotopic neurons.

Focal to bilateral tonic–clonic seizures predict pharmacoresistance in focal cortical dysplasia–related epilepsy

Epilepsia, 2023
Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most common etiology of surgically‐remediable epilepsy in children. Eighty‐seven percent of patients with FCD develop epilepsy (75% is pharmacoresistant epilepsy [PRE]).

Neocortical development and epilepsy: insights from focal cortical dysplasia and brain tumours.

Lancet Neurology, 2021
During the past decade, there have been considerable advances in understanding of the genetic and morphogenic processes underlying cortical malformations and developmental brain tumours. Focal malformations are caused by somatic (postzygotic) variants in

Cortical development and focal cortical dysplasia

Epileptic Disorders, 2003
A brief survey of cortical development is presented, focusing on neuronal migration and its alterations. Corticogenesis is achieved through ordered temporospatial steps, via the formation of transient structures, and successive waves of cell proliferation and migration (followed by cell differentiation and maturation), and apoptotic cell death.

Focal cortical dysplasia: an update on diagnosis and treatment

Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics, 2021
Introduction Focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) represent the most common etiology in pediatric drug-resistant focal epilepsies undergoing surgical treatment.

Dysmorphic neurons as cellular source for phase-amplitude coupling in Focal Cortical Dysplasia Type II.

Clinical Neurophysiology, 2021
OBJECTIVE Reliable localization of the epileptogenic zone is necessary for successful epilepsy surgery. Neurophysiological biomarkers include ictal onsets and interictal spikes.

CCDC22 variants caused X-linked focal epilepsy and focal cortical dysplasia.

Seizure
BACKGROUND The CCDC22 gene plays vital roles in regulating the NF-κB pathway, an essential pathway for neuroinflammation, neurodevelopment, and epileptogenesis.

Seizure Outcome After Surgery for MRI-Diagnosed Focal Cortical Dysplasia

Neurology, 2021
Background and Objectives Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) has been associated with poorer postsurgical seizure outcomes compared to other pathologies. FCD surgical series have been assembled on the basis of a histologic diagnosis, including patients with ...
