Focal Mechanism and Seismogram Modeling

2010
The focal mechanism or the fault plane solution describes the orientation of the fault and the slip on the fault relative to a geographical coordinate system. The focal mechanism is the most important parameter to determine once the location and magnitude are known and it is used to determine the actual geometry of the faults as well as inferring the ...

Intrinsic Triggering Mechanisms in Focal Paroxysmal Discharges

Epilepsia, 1966
SUMMARYStudies were made on neurons of the motor cortex of cats before and after topically applied strychnine evoked focal paroxysmal discharges. No obvious changes were found in “epileptic” neurons in resting conditions, especially in their membrane resting potentials and input resistance.

The Focal Mechanism of Earthquakes

1962
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the development of Byerly's method of fault-plane determination. The essential features of the methods of focal mechanism study are established and their efficacy as a means of investigating the origins of earthquakes has been demonstrated. The focal mechanism studies of earthquakes intend two things.

Mechanisms underlying partial (focal, or lesional) epilepsy

Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2000
Neuronal mechanisms underlying focal convulsions and secondary generalised convulsions have been extensively investigated at many different levels, from the biochemical, through the cellular to the intact brain. Numerous pathogenic processes relevant to epilepsy are now known.

85.12 FOCMEC: FOCal MEChanism determinations

2003
This chapter focuses on focal mechanism determinations (FOCMEC). Focmec, performs an efficient, systematic search of the focal sphere and reports acceptable solutions based on selection criteria for the number of polarity errors and errors in amplitude ratios. The search of the focal sphere is uniform in angle, with selectable step size and bounds. The

Earthquake focal mechanism studies—A review

Earth-Science Reviews, 1973
Abstract This article reviews the development of the study of the focal mechanism of earthquakes. The representation of focus by point and finite sources are reviewed. The use of initial motion and spectral amplitude of P-waves, the polarization of S-waves and the application of numerical methods in determining optimum solutions are discussed.

EARTHQUAKE FOCAL MECHANISMS AND CONTINENTAL DRIFT

The APPEA Journal, 1972
By studying the first motions of earthquakes recorded at seismograph stations throughout the world it is possible to determine the type of faulting which takes place at the focus of an earthquake. Three main types of faulting are observed:thrust faulting, which is common in island arc provinces;normal faulting, which is common along mid-ocean ridges ...
