Determination of focal mechanism solution using initial motion polarity of P and S waves
Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2002Abstract It is important to determine accurate focal mechanism solutions for earthquakes with small magnitudes or those recorded by a small number of seismometers, perhaps with an unfavorable geographic distribution. A method using initial motion polarity of S waves, in addition to P waves, is described.

Based on P-and S-wave amplitudes and some clear initial P-wave motion data, we calculated focal mechanism solutions of 928 M≥2.5 earthquakes (1994–2005) in four sub-blocks of Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces, namely Sichuan-Qinghai, Yajiang, Central Sichuan and Central Yunnan blocks.

Focal mechanism solutions for earthquakes in Iran
Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1984Abstract Focal mechanism solutions, derived by using P-wave first motion directions read from seismograms of Worldwide Standardized Stations Network (WWSSN), are presented for 36 earthquakes in Iran. In many cases the first motion data admit more than one solution.

FOCAL MECHANISM SOLUTION OF THE 15TH MARCH 2008, NYAMANDLOVU EARTHQUAKE
South African Journal of Geology, 2009The focal mechanism solution of the 15th March 2008 earthquake (mb = 4.3) that occurred in the Nyamandlovu area, northwest of Bulawayo City, Zimbabwe, has been determined from P-wave first motion polarities. Results show normal oblique left lateral faulting. The earthquake mechanism bears a signature that is almost identical to those of events recorded

The sequence characteristics and focal mechanism solution of the Jiashi, Xinjiang strong earthquake swarm are analyzed and studied in this paper. The result shows that before the MS=6.6 earthquake, value h of sequence frequency attenuation coefficient was less than 1, then value h was more than 1.

Earthquake focal mechanism data provide information about the stress state at the origin of earthquakes. The inversion methods that are commonly used to infer the stress tensor from focal mechanisms have varying complexity but always rely on a number ...

A probability model for regional focal mechanism solutions
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1980abstractThe increase in the number of determinations of fault-plane solutions and their use for inferences on regional and local tectonics and stress fields makes it advisable to treat them in a standard way in groups on a regional basis. Probability models for joint group estimation of the shear dislocations, involving data from I earthquakes and J ...

Focal Mechanism Solutions and Tectonics of the Middle America ARC
The Journal of Geology, 1978Fault plane solutions of 67 earthquakes along the Middle America arc were determined. These focal mechanisms delineate tectonic activity characteristics of a subduction zone. Focal mechanisms of shallow events beneath the trench axis indicate normal faulting resulting from initial flexure of the downgoing plate.
