Determination of focal mechanism solution using initial motion polarity of P and S waves

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2002
Abstract It is important to determine accurate focal mechanism solutions for earthquakes with small magnitudes or those recorded by a small number of seismometers, perhaps with an unfavorable geographic distribution. A method using initial motion polarity of S waves, in addition to P waves, is described.

Types of focal mechanism solutions and parameter consistency of the sub-blocks in Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces

Acta Seismologica Sinica, 2006
Based on P-and S-wave amplitudes and some clear initial P-wave motion data, we calculated focal mechanism solutions of 928 M≥2.5 earthquakes (1994–2005) in four sub-blocks of Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces, namely Sichuan-Qinghai, Yajiang, Central Sichuan and Central Yunnan blocks.

Focal mechanism solutions for earthquakes in Iran

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1984
Abstract Focal mechanism solutions, derived by using P-wave first motion directions read from seismograms of Worldwide Standardized Stations Network (WWSSN), are presented for 36 earthquakes in Iran. In many cases the first motion data admit more than one solution.

FOCAL MECHANISM SOLUTION OF THE 15TH MARCH 2008, NYAMANDLOVU EARTHQUAKE

South African Journal of Geology, 2009
The focal mechanism solution of the 15th March 2008 earthquake (mb = 4.3) that occurred in the Nyamandlovu area, northwest of Bulawayo City, Zimbabwe, has been determined from P-wave first motion polarities. Results show normal oblique left lateral faulting. The earthquake mechanism bears a signature that is almost identical to those of events recorded

A priliminary study on the sequence characteristics and focal mechanism solution of the Jiashi strong earthquake swarm

Acta Seismologica Sinica, 1998
The sequence characteristics and focal mechanism solution of the Jiashi, Xinjiang strong earthquake swarm are analyzed and studied in this paper. The result shows that before the MS=6.6 earthquake, value h of sequence frequency attenuation coefficient was less than 1, then value h was more than 1.
