Attention has memory: priming for the size of the attentional focus

Spatial Vision, 2009
Repeating the same target's features or spatial position, as well as repeating the same context (e.g. distractor sets) in visual search leads to a decrease of reaction times. This modulation can occur on a trial by trial basis (the previous trial primes the following one), but can also occur across multiple trials (i.e. performance in the current trial

Focus-of-attention from local color symmetries

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2004
In this paper, a continuous valued measure for local color symmetry is introduced. The new algorithm is an extension of the successful gray value-based symmetry map proposed by Reisfeld et al. The use of color facilitates the detection of focus points (FPs) on objects that are difficult to detect using gray-value contrast only.

Influence of Attentional Focus on Reaction Time

Psychological Reports, 1985
It was hypothesized that attention could be directed to the emphasized task regardless of its spatial location. 20 subjects performed a simple RT to a stimulus located in foveal vision and a simple RT to four surrounding stimuli set in the visual periphery. Importance of task was manipulated through instructions.

Focus of attention during motor skill performance

Journal of Sports Sciences, 1994
The effect of strategy instruction on response time in a sequential keypressing task was compared during acquisition and retention. Specifically, this study determined the influence of: (1) an awareness strategy, (2) a non-awareness strategy, (3) a Five-Step Approach strategy and (4) a control condition. Sixty-four subjects completed 250 trials of nine

Focus of attention and automaticity in handwriting

Human Movement Science, 2014
This study investigated the nature of automaticity in everyday tasks by testing handwriting performance under single and dual-task conditions. Item familiarity and hand dominance were also manipulated to understand both cognitive and motor components of the task.

Focus of attention and speech motor performance

Journal of Communication Disorders, 2013
The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of an internal vs. external 'focus of attention' on speech motor performance in healthy young adults.Twenty adults (aged 18-25) participated in a within-subjects experimental design. Nonwords, real words, and tongue twisters were produced by each participant in both attentional focus conditions ...

Attention: The Focus of Consciousness

2016
A resident physician finishes his last night shift at the end of a week of night calls. It is 5:00 a.m. and the last few hours have been particularly straining because of several unstable patients. The resident is very tired but conscientiously decides to do rounds on his patients one more time before getting some rest. While evaluating a patient whose

Internal focus as a subset of attention

Neuropsychologia, 1972
Abstract This report attempts to marshall more evidence on internal focus of attention in humans. The theoretical model used capitalizes on changes in EEG states as the dependent variable and a verbal command of the experimenter to start alpha generation as the independent variable, in order to predict internal focus of attention.

Focus of Attention and Altruism

1984
In recent years several attempts have been made to describe motivational mechanisms underlying altruistic behavior and various mechanisms have been proposed (see Karylowski, 1977, 1982a, for a review). There now seems to be an emerging consensus that altruism is a polimotivated phenomenon and that one-factor theories are insufficient (cf. Bar-Tal, 1976;
