Focusing on spontaneous focusing

Mathematical Thinking and Learning, 2020
By the time children start formal education there are already substantial individual differences in their mathematical skills (e.g., Ginsburg et al., 2008; Klibanoff et al., 2006).

Edge Focusing

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 1987
Edge detection in a gray-scale image at a fine resolution typically yields noise and unnecessary detail, whereas edge detection at a coarse resolution distorts edge contours. We show that ``edge focusing'', i.e., a coarse-to-fine tracking in a continuous manner, combines high positional accuracy with good noise-reduction.

Focused ultrasound: focused on tremor

Expert Review of Medical Devices
Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) has emerged as a leading noninvasive therapy for tremor, offering a precise, lesion-based alternative to deep brain stimulation (DBS) and traditional lesioning techniques. By using phased ultrasound arrays to focus energy at intracranial targets, MRgFUS allows for real-time visualization and ...

Affect-Focused and Exposure-Focused Psychotherapies

American Journal of Psychotherapy
The authors discuss the two broad domains of affect-focused and exposure-focused psychotherapies, defining the characteristics and potential advantages and disadvantages of each. The two domains differ in their theoretical approaches, structures, and techniques.

Self-focusing of tightly focused laser beams

Applied Optics, 2015
Laser-induced damage (LID) thresholds of pure fused silica have been measured with single-temporal-mode nanosecond pulses at 1.064 μm. The laser beam was focused by spherical lens or axicon into 2.7 μm diameter spots with identical cross-sectional distribution of the central lobe irradiances.
