Four patients who had no oocytes retrieved during an IVF cycle were studied in an attempt to identify predictors of such an occurrence and suggestions for its cause. All 30 follicles aspirated in five cycles in these four women yielded no oocytes. One patient had two cycles that produced no eggs. The empty follicle syndrome may represent a new syndrome

A case of a 5-year-old child with a rare nevus of a hair follicle is reported. Histologically it was characterized by many hair follicles within the dermis at the same level of maturation. This nevus must be differentiated from other hamartomas of hair follicles and from Becker's nevus.

To the Editor.— In theArchives(104:431-433, 1971) Drs. D. J. Pirozzi and P. R. Gross refer to the perifollicular disposition of xanthomas in a patient affected with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia as an entity not previously reported. In our department we have observed three patients with similar lesions and the same metabolic disorder of lipids and ...

Activation of follicle development: the primordial follicle
Theriogenology, 2001Investigations of primordial follicle formation and growth are fundamental to our understanding of female gamete production. In all mammalian females the full complement of oocytes is established during fetal development. This store of primordial follicles is not renewable and serves the entire reproductive life span of the adult.

Hair follicle predetermination
Journal of Cell Science, 2001Recent genetic and molecular studies of hair follicle (HF) biology have provided substantial insight; however, the molecular data, including expression patterns, cannot be properly appreciated without an understanding of the basic cellular rearrangements and interactions that underpin HF cyclic transformations.

Follicle selection occurs throughout an adult female's reproductive life, with selected, dominant follicle(s) developing to the preovulatory stage whereas the remaining, subordinate follicles within the growing cohort instead undergo atresia and die. To date, most research into follicle dominance has concentrated on its endocrine regulation, although ...
