Estrogen Actions on Follicle Formation and Early Follicle Development1 [PDF]
Estradiol-17beta (E(2)) affects late follicular development, whereas primordial follicle differentiation and early activation are believed to be independent of E(2). To test this hypothesis we compared numbers of primordial and primary follicles in wild-type and E(2)-deficient, aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice, and the immunohistochemical staining or ...

Follicle selection in domestic ruminants.
Ultrasound imaging has shown that cattle exhibit 2 or 3 waves of follicular development during an oestrous cycle. The waves consist of the contemporaneous appearance, about every 7 days, of a group of follicles > or = 5 mm in diameter.

Follicle Development of Xenotransplanted Sheep Ovarian Tissue into Male and Female Immunodeficient Rats [PDF]
Background This study aimed to assess follicle survival after xenotransplantation of sheep ovarian tissue into male and female immunodeficient rats. We evaluated the effects of gonadotropin treatment on follicular development in the transplanted tissue ...

Regulation of follicle waves to maximize fertility in cattle.
Cattle have recurrent follicular waves every 7-10 days in most physiological situations; an FSH increase is associated with emergence of the wave and LH pulse frequency determines the fate of the dominant follicle.

Expression of Relaxin 3 in the Ovarian Follicle of Japanese Quail
The relaxin (RLN) gene is expressed in the reproductive tracts, such as the ovary and uterus, of mammalian species. Although RLN expression is detected in the chicken ovary, detailed clarification of the physiological role of RLN has not yet been ...

Granulosa Cell Apoptosis in the Ovarian Follicle—A Changing View
Recent studies challenge the previous view that apoptosis within the granulosa cells of the maturing ovarian follicle is a reflection of aging and consequently a marker for poor quality of the contained oocyte.
