Pleural effusions following the Fontan procedure
Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2010The Fontan procedure is the final common pathway in the surgical palliation of many single ventricle heart defects. Mortality has improved but morbidity remains significant. Pleural effusions continue to present challenges after this operation and account for increased length of stay and increased time with draining tube thoracostomies.

The fontan procedure: A historical review
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1991Complete bypass of the right ventricle was first performed successfully and subsequently reported by Fontan and Baudet for patients with tricuspid atresia. By eliminating congenital and surgical shunts, ventricular volume overload and pulmonary hypertension were avoided.

Heart & lung : the journal of critical care, 1985
The Fontan procedure has afforded improved surgical repair for several complex congenital cardiac defects, including tricuspid atresia and single ventricle. Through surgical creation of a connection between the RA and the RV or PA, adequate pulmonary perfusion can be achieved without an RV.

Hepatic Dysfunction Following the Fontan Procedure
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2003ABSTRACTObjectivesThe Fontan procedure offers a palliation for the hemodynamic derangements associated with congenital heart lesions characterized by a single functional ventricle, but it causes a chronically elevated systemic venous pressure that may result in hepatic congestion. The objective of this study was to characterize hepatic function and its

Resuscitation after modified fontan procedure
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1994As the survival rate after modified Fontan procedure is increasing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be needed in such patients for other causes not related to their cardiac status. The state-of-the-art cardiopulmonary resuscitation with external chest compression may not be sufficient to revive such patients, and the addition of external abdominal ...

Extracardiac conduit Fontan procedure versus intra-atrial lateral tunnel Fontan procedure
General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2012The Fontan procedure has provided excellent surgical palliation for patients with various types of univentricular hearts, and it has evolved over time. Among many modifications, the lateral tunnel Fontan connection (LTF) and the extracardiac Fontan connection (ECF) are currently the most popular techniques for completing the total cavopulmonary ...

Dysrhythmias after the modified Fontan procedure
Pediatric Cardiology, 1988The cardiac rhythm before and after the modified Fontan procedure was reviewed in 24 patients. Transient atrial dysrhythmias were common in the immediate postoperative period. Late postoperative premature atrial contractions were detected by ambulatory monitoring in 20 of 23 patients; eight (34.8%) had supraventricular tachycardia.

Heart Transplantation in Children With a Fontan Procedure
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2011Previous studies have reported that children with a prior Fontan procedure have decreased survival after heart transplantation. We examined 190 primary pediatric heart transplants.Since 1988, 27 (14.2%) of 190 children less than 18 years old undergoing primary heart transplantation had a Fontan procedure 3.7 ± 4.3 years before transplantation. Compared

Late Outcome After the Fontan Procedure
Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Annual, 1998Relatively little data exist on intermediate to late functional status and survival of patients after Fontan procedures. The first 500 patients undergoing a Fontan procedure at Children's Hospital (Boston, MA) were reviewed and then followed. There were 31 late failures among 410 patients contacted, and probability of survival at 10 years was 71.4 ...
