Politics and policies of food self-sufficiency in Tanzania
Social Science & Medicine, 1986Since independence, Tanzania has stated her food production goals in many national declarations and indicated how the policies were to be met. Implementation of policies has not produced more food because the political ends were not consistent with economic directions. This paper discusses both.

The End to Food Self-Sufficiency in Mexico
Latin American Perspectives, 1987Mexico has ceased to be self-sufficient in food.' Its tortillas are no longer made from locally grown raw materials; it cannot supply all of its demand for meat and dairy products, or even animal feed. This crisis had its origins in economic policies of the 1960s and was exacerbated by a great drought in 1979 and 1980.
