In vitro and in sacco determination of neutral detergent fibre digestibility of treated cereal straw

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Cereal straw is hardly digestible due to its complex bonds of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. That is why chemical treatments, such as with sodium hydroxide, may help to loosen the bonds and thus increase ruminal digestibility. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility is a good predictor of feed intake.

The results of an NPK-fertilisation trial of long-term crop rotation on carbonate-rich soil in Estonia

open access: yesActa Agriculturae Scandinavica. Section B, Soil and Plant Science, 2019
Soil is an element of crop cultivation that demands consistent fertilisation to compensate for the nutrients that are removed by the harvest. Changes in soil because of prolonged fertilisation can only be estimated by long-term field trials.

Use of natural ensiling additives with tropical grasses: Physicochemical properties, in vitro fermentation characteristics, and microbial community diversity indices

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Improving feed quality, availability, and cost‐effectiveness is a big challenge for livestock to ensure animal‐derived food for nutritional security. The aim of the study was to find out how some natural ensiling additives affect physicochemical properties, proximate composition, microbial population, in vitro fermentation ...

Sensorial and nutritional qualities of muscles from cross‐bred Salers heifers raised on mid‐mountain pasture

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background This study investigated the effects of crossbreeding, finishing system, and muscle type on carcass characteristics, intramuscular fat (IMF), image‐based IMF estimation, fatty acid composition, and meat quality in beef heifers. Charolais × Salers (C × S) and Angus × Salers (A × S) crossbred heifers were finished either on pasture or ...

Macronutrient and micronutrient profiles of meat types: insights into human health and diet

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite considerable advances in global health and nutrition, emerging challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limited natural resources continue to threaten food security. Meat remains an essential component of the human diet, supplying high‐quality proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals necessary ...

Bee pollen as functional food and environmental bioindicator: current evidence and future challenges

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Bee pollen (BP), a plant‐derived product collected by honey bees, is increasingly promoted as a functional food due to its content of proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids.
