Winter Active Bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) Achieve High Foraging Rates in Urban Britain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
BackgroundForaging bumblebees are normally associated with spring and summer in northern Europe. However, there have been sightings of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris during the warmer winters in recent years in southern England.

Harvester ant colony variation in foraging activity and response to humidity. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Collective behavior is produced by interactions among individuals. Differences among groups in individual response to interactions can lead to ecologically important variation among groups in collective behavior.

MOF‐Derived Cu‐TiO2/Alginate Micromotors for Buoyancy‐Regulated 3D Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this work, cyanobacteria‐inspired sodium alginate (SA)/Cu‐TiO2/Fe3O4 hydrogel micromotors generate and encapsulate O2 microvesicles upon light irradiation, enabling buoyancy‐mediated Z‐axis upward migration and surface enrichment at the light‐exposed water‐air surface.

Visualising and animating visual information foraging in context [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Optimal information foraging provides a potentially useful framework for modelling, analysing, and interpreting search strategies of users through a spatial-semantic interface.

Deep learning model for detecting fish foraging movement and distance

open access: yesEcological Informatics
Koi (Cyprinus carpio) is a high-value ornamental fish species with both ecological and economic importance, particularly in East Asia, Notably, few studies have conducted quantitative analysis of koi foraging behavior in intelligent aquaculture systems ...

Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Why do Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) carry conch shells (Turbinella sp.) in Shark Bay, Western Australia? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) in Shark Bay, Western Australia, exhibit a remarkable array of foraging tactics within a single population (Mann and Sargeant 2003).

Temporary Programs, Lasting Questions: Ad Hoc Assistance in the U.S. Farm Safety Net

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large ad hoc assistance programs have returned to U.S. farm policy since 2017, operating alongside a more developed safety net built around federally subsidized crop insurance, Title I commodity programs, and standing disaster assistance. This paper reviews the renewed use of ad hoc assistance, documents its recent scale using USDA data, and ...

Predation risk and floral rewards: How pollinators balance these conflicts and the consequences on plant fitness

open access: yesCurrent Research in Insect Science
Foraging behavior of pollinators is shaped by, among other factors, the conflict between maximizing resource intake and minimizing predation risk; yet, empirical studies quantifying variation in both forces are rare, compared to those investigating each ...
