Low Participation and Risk Reduction Potential of Supplemental Crop Insurance in the United States

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Federally subsidized crop insurance is a cornerstone of U.S. farm risk management, yet policies with the greatest share of participation only trigger indemnities after losses exceed 15%. Supplemental insurance was introduced to cover part of this deductible, but participation remains largely unchanged.

Foraging ecology of the African Penguin Spheniscus demersus in relation to ocean physical processes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Includes abstract. This research demonstrated the dual utility of bio-loggers as a method for generating accurate, high-resolution oceanographic data. These data can be used in future studies, generating a cross disciplinary platform for research.

Effectiveness of the Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage Rainfall Index (PRF‐RI) Program: Interval Selections With Uniform Premium Subsidy Rates

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines interval selection in the Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage Rainfall Index (PRF‐RI) program and evaluates how uniform premium subsidy rates affect optimal interval selections. Using South Dakota as a case study, we show a trend of increasing selection of nonproduction intervals from 2013 to 2024, raising concerns about program

The emergence of leaders and followers in foraging pairs when the qualities of individuals differ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background Foraging in groups offers animals a number of advantages, such as increasing their likelihood of finding food or detecting and avoiding predators.

Differential regulation of the foraging gene associated with task behaviors in harvester ants

open access: yesBMC Ecology, 2011
Background The division of labor in social insect colonies involves transitions by workers from one task to another and is critical to the organization and ecological success of colonies.

Guidelines for High‐Throughput Screening for Natural Products With Anti‐Aging Activity Based on Drosophila Intestinal Homeostasis

open access: yesAgriFood: Journal of Agricultural Products for Food, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aging represents a critical risk factor for chronic diseases, driving an urgent demand for interventions promoting healthy longevity. This study establishes standardized guidelines for high‐throughput screening (HTS) of anti‐aging natural products using Drosophila melanogaster, leveraging its intestinal homeostasis as a biomarker.

Evolution of Physical Intelligence Across Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
By following the evolution of physical intelligence across scales, this article shows how intelligence arises from materials, structures, physical interactions, and collectives. It establishes physical intelligence as the evolutionary foundation upon which embodied intelligence is built.

Foraging initiation and foraging behavior in high and low performance of Iranian honeybee, Apis mellifera meda (Hym.: Apidae), colonies [PDF]

open access: yesنامه انجمن حشره‌شناسی ایران, 2014
The starting of foraging is likely the most important phenomenon in the age based division of labor in honeybees. It also prepare one of the most complicated phenotypic trait in biological system since the intercourse of different external, social and ...

Effects of fat and protein levels on foraging preferences of tannin in scatter-hoarding rodents.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Both as consumers and dispersers of seeds, scatter-hoarding rodents often play an important role in the reproductive ecology of many plant species. However, the seeds of many plant species contain tannins, which are a diverse group of water-soluble ...

Explaining the Origin of Negative Poisson's Ratio in Amorphous Networks With Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This review summarizes how machine learning (ML) breaks the “vicious cycle” in designing auxetic amorphous networks. By transitioning from traditional “black‐box” optimization to an interpretable “AI‐Physics” closed‐loop paradigm, ML is shown to not only discover highly optimized structures—such as all‐convex polygon networks—but also unveil hidden ...
