Cervicomedullary decompression for foramen magnum stenosis in achondroplasia
Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, 2006Achondroplasia is the most common hereditary form of dwarfism, and is characterized by short stature, macrocephaly, and a myriad of skeletal abnormalities. In the pediatric population, stenosis and compression at the level of the cervicomedullary junction commonly occurs. The goal in this study was to assess the outcomes in children with achondroplasia

Headache, Chiari I malformation and foramen magnum decompression
Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 2018Purpose of review With increasing use of MRI, more patients are being diagnosed with Chiari I malformation (CM1), many of whom are asymptomatic. When symptoms are present, headache is the most frequent presenting feature, although symptoms can be variable.

Foramen magnum decompression in an infant with homozygous achondroplasia
Journal of Neurosurgery, 1989✓ Homozygous achondroplasia is a rare yet distinct clinical entity. Most infants succumb to an early death as a result of respiratory compromise due to upper airway obstruction, thoracic cage deformity, and/or cervicomedullary compression. The successful cervicomedullary decompression of a 16-week-old infant with homozygous achondroplasia is described.

Chiari 1 malformation is a structural abnormality of the hindbrain and posterior fossa characterized by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. Although asymptomatic in some cases, hindbrain herniation can be associated with disruption of cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics at the craniovertebral junction and syrinx formation ...

Foramen magnum decompression for Chiari malformation type I – UK surgical practice
British Journal of Neurosurgery, 2022Background: Symptomatic Chiari 1 malformation (CM1) is a common condition in Neurosurgery. Surgery involves hindbrain decompression and restoration of CSF flow through different surgical approaches. No Class 1 evidence exists to suggest the superiority of any of the surgical techniques.Aims: To investigate current surgical practice for symptomatic CM1 ...

Foramen magnum decompression for Chiari I malformation: A procedure not to be underestimated
British Journal of Neurosurgery, 2013Chiari I malformation may be treated with foramen magnum decompression (FMD). We aim to describe the symptoms with which patients initially present, and to determine the number and type of complications occurring after FMD for Chiari I malformation.Retrospective review of medical records for patients who had FMD performed for Chiari I malformation ...

Foramen magnum decompression versus terminal ventriculostomy for the treatment of syringomyelia
Acta Neurochirurgica, 1988The A.A review 30 consecutive cases of syringomyelia operated on during the last seven years. Six terminal ventriculostomies (TV) and twenty-seven procedures for foramen magnum decompression (FMD) were performed. All patients of TV group had CT-myelography (CTM) and/or NMR controls at different times after surgery.

Management of cervicomedullary compression due to foramen magnum stenosis in achondroplasia remains controversial, especially for patients with no symptoms or mild symptoms. We examined the effectiveness of polysomnography (PSG) as an indicator for cervicomedullary decompression treatment. We retrospectively reviewed nine achondroplasia cases (mean age ...

Foramen magnum encroachment has been cited as a potential cause for the premature demise of patients afflicted with craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD). To our knowledge, the association of Chiari malformation and syringomyelia with CMD has not been previously reported.
