Foramen magnum stenosis in homozygous achondroplasia

European Journal of Pediatrics, 1986
A 4-month-old female with homozygous achondroplasia and daytime apnea was found to have a small foramen magnum by computerized tomography. Following suboccipital craniectomy and C1-C2 laminectomy respiratory problems did not recur during a 7 month post-operative period. We suggest that the respiratory problems in homozygous achondroplasia may be due to

Improvement in ventriculomegaly following cervicomedullary decompressive surgery in children with achondroplasia and foramen magnum stenosis

American Journal of Medical Genetics, Part A, 2020
AbstractThe role of cervicomedullary decompression (CMD) in the care of hydrocephalic achondroplastic children who present with simultaneous foramen magnum stenosis is not well understood. We sought to determine the percentage of symptomatic achondroplastic children with foramen magnum stenosis who had stabilization or improvement in ventriculomegaly ...

Unravelling the pathogenesis of foramen magnum stenosis in patients with severe achondroplasia: a CT-based comparison with age-matched controls and FGFR3 craniosynostosis syndromes

Child's Nervous System, 2023
Foramen magnum(FM) stenosis can be responsible for acute and chronic damage to the cervicomedullary junction in children with achondroplasia. The bony anatomy and patterns of suture fusion of the FM in this context are incompletely understood, yet becoming increasingly important in the light of novel medical therapies for achondroplasia.

Stenosis of the Foramen Magnum and Rostral Spinal Canal, With Spinal Cord Deformity, In Jeune's Asphyxiating Thoracic Dystrophy

Pediatric Pathology, 1989
Ventilatory compromise in Jeune's asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (JTD) generally is attributed to abnormalities in thoracic configuration that produce restrictive pulmonary disease and pulmonary hypoplasia. We present our findings following dissection and roentgenography of the base of the skull and the vertebral column in a premature infant with JTD.
